Lost in the Sauce...

It's so easy to get lost in the sauce. Find out why letting your mind reel with thoughts and random songs can be detrimental to your life.

I had been singing the song for two days. I actually caught myself in the shower and realized it. To anyone else, it would have seemed like another “earworm” but to me, it was clutter. Moving along task to task, singing mindlessly + letting the mind jump thought to thought meant that my breath was shallow.

“Your breath is a reflection of your mind,” my friend and yoga teacher Cybele said.

The reflection I was seeing wasn’t the clearest. In fact, it was downright hazy. I slowly let my meditation and breathing practice fall by the wayside this last week. A casualty to business or busy-ness, maybe. I just know that it wasn’t a priority and when that is the case, anything can win out. In my case, more sleep.

And the result? Not being at the top of my game. Randomly singing songs + letting the monkey mind loose and not finding the words when I needed them [worse then my usual blonde moments].

When the mind has free reign to get carried away in a song or a thought, we are just clogging up the waterways. Like a beaver dam, each thought is a stick in the water. As we add more thoughts, we eventually stop the flow completely. The things that important to us will not flow within us, from us or to us. We may even find ourselves less likely to deal with challenges [i.e. the rocks in the water] because there is no space to wrap our head around the matter.

When we practice meditation and breathing [pranayama], we slow down. We remove the sticks one by one. The river flows once again + we are able to “go with the flow” when issues arise, be they pebbles or boulders.

“I’ve got news for you. When you’re NOT doing breathing and meditation work, you aren’t doing yoga,” says one of my favorite teachers Kelly Morris of Conquering Lion NYC. “You are doing what my guru calls Indian calisthenics.”

When you come to class, take a moment in your car or at your mat and sit quietly. Find your breath and clear the debris from the water. Those five minutes will be so beneficial and will help take your practice deeper. It will help make yoga more of a state of being in your life.  And when you have a clear mind, you can have a better relationship with others --be it with God, your spouse, friends or yoga students. ;)
