Grayson City Hall, Senior Center to See Facelift

The city council approved the proposal for building maintenance and the design proposal for a crosswalk at Grayson Elementary School at its monthly meeting Monday.

The Grayson City Council and mayor met Monday (Sept. 16) for its regular work session and monthly meeting.

Among the items approved was the building maintenance to the city hall and senior center.

The council voted unanimously to pay a $1,000 insurance deductible for fixing the hail-damaged roof on both buildings. The two buildings also will have its cornices replaced and new paint added for about $13,000. All the windows in city hall will be replaced for $2,586. Additionally, the city is purchasing all materials for $4,216 since the aforementioned prices are for the cost of labor.

The design proposal for a crosswalk at Grayson Elementary School across State Route 84 also was approved.

Councilwoman Allison Wilkerson explained that the school contacted her because they were concerned with parking issues. The more the Georgia Department of Transportation looked at the issue, though, they realized that there are crosswalk signs at the school when there is no actual crosswalk.

"It's just not safe," she said.

The school submitted a proposal to GDOT for the sidewalk, and the state approved to pay for the striping, which should be completed after the road is paved sometime next year. The school is responsible for the curb cuts and signage.

Even though the design has to be approved by GDOT, the city will be able to dictate where the crosswalk is located so that it doesn't disrupt any future building plans. The crosswalk is expected to stretch from the school to somewhere next to city hall along the Thompson property, where the city anticipates a future amphitheater.

Other items were discussed at the city council meeting:

-City Administrator Laura Paul-Cone announced that film crews will be in town Thursday (Sept. 19) shooting a new reality show called "Hollywood Hillbillies."

-Paving and shoulder work for Britt Street at a cost of $5,135 was passed unanimously.

-A 3x5 sign was approved for the 438 building, also known as the Grayson Downtown Development Authority building at 438 Grayson Parkway.

-A request for proposal for a lawn care contract of all city properties was approved. The next step would be for the city to hold a mandatory site visit for bidders.

-The city council also approved an update on the city's Professional Planning Services for the Comprehensive Plan Five-Year Short Term Work program and disregarded last month's approval.
