Some big names in the Republican Party are in Georgia this weekend for the GOP Convention that is taking place at the Classic Center in Athens. Scheduled speakers include Republican strategist Karl Rove and former U.S. Congressman Allen West. Gov. H.B. 131 will help students dually enrolled in high school and college.
Gov. Nathan Deal was at Georgia Gwinnett College Friday to sign H.B. 131 into law. The bill, introduced by Lawrenceville State Representative Valerie Clark, allows students dually enrolled in high school and college to apply their college credits towards their application for the HOPE Scholarships. Friday, Georgia became one of five states under Republican governors that rejected the provision in the president's healthcare reform calling on states to set up online health insurance exchanges.
On Friday, Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia became the fifth governor of a state to reject a provision in the president's healthcare reform law. According to Reuters, the other four states that had already rejected the provision that would require the states to set up healthcare exchanges are Ohio, Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin. Ohio, Michigan and Florida, however, have indicated a willingness to share in some of the responsibility with Washington. Deal was one of the many governors who held off on making a decision until after the election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney had pledged to repeal the president's healthcare plan if elected. Gov. Nathan Deal has filed for attorney's fees regarding an ethics violation brought against him by George Anderson. Meanwhile, a local nonprofit is trying to change the law regarding ethics complaints.
On Sept. 20, Governor Nathan Deal filed for attorney's fees against George Anderson, claiming that Anderson "filed unsubstantiated, as well as, frivolous accusations concerning payments to Southern Magnolia LLC, alleging kickbacks to Respondent, untrue allegations of personal profit from campaign funds, as well as, allegations regarding good friend and appointee Patrick Millsaps to the State Ethics Commission." Anderson claims that he is being attacked with "abuse litigation." With traffic creeping along the I-75/I-85 Connector below, Gov. Nathan Deal and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle stood high atop an 18-story Midtown office tower early Wednesday evening and urged Metro Atlantans to vote in favor of next month’s regional transportation penny sales tax referendum. The pair addressed a small group of reporters atop the Atlantic Station building prior to a private fundraiser for local business leaders who are in favor of the tax’s passage. A new Insider Advantage poll of 539 people shows that 47 percent of those asked would vote against the 10-year, one cent sales tax, with 32 percent for it and 21 percent undecided. From immigration to child booster seats, there are several new state laws on the books starting today.
A number of new state laws signed by Gov. Nathan Deal are now in effect across Georgia, from changes in child booster seat laws to the highly controversial Sunday alcohol sales and immigration laws. Here are some of the new laws: HB 87 - Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011. Penalizes those who use fake identification to get a job in the state of Georgia. Also penalizes government officials who violate state laws on immigration enforcement. HB 101 - Bicycles; safety; change provisions. Makes it safer for bicycle riders and drivers on roads by requiring drivers to pass cyclists by at least three feet, among other things.
