UPDATE: Six Traffic Deaths Reported in Georgia During New Year's Holiday

The Georgia State Patrol reported its troopers investigated 586 accidents as of daybreak today.

UPDATED 5:45 a.m., Jan. 2. Georgia State Troopers have investigated more crashes during this New Year's holiday than last year, with injuries rising above New Year's 2012 levels, and almost as many deaths – six so far this year, compared to seven last year. The GSP investigated three of the fatal traffic accidents, with local agencies investigating the other three. Troopers have investigated 585 accidents as of daybreak today, Jan. 1, which included 266 injuries and three deaths. During last year's entire 102-hour holiday, the Department of Public Safety investigated 296 accidents. Those accidents included 172 injuries and 7 deaths. 19 Die in Traffic Accidents in Georgia Over Thanksgiving Holiday

Speed, alcohol or failure to wear a seat belt are blamed in almost all of the fatal crashes. None were reported by the Georgia State Patrol Post in Monroe.

The 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended at midnight with 19 traffic fatalities reported across the state. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes that occurred between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Sunday, Nov. 25. The 19 traffic fatalities is one more than in 2011. State troopers investigated a total of 622 traffic crashes during the period that resulted in 263 injuries. Of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers, alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in 4 of the crashes, and 7 of the victims were not using seat belts. Loganville Man at 'Wrong Place at Wrong Time' Injured in Monroe Wreck

A man from Loganville was at a stop sign on Highway 78 at Troy Smith Road in Monroe on Monday morning when he was hit by both cars trying to avoid a collision.

Gilbert Reed of Loganville was slowing down to stop at the intersection of Troy Smith at Highway 78 in Monroe on Monday when he was tagged teamed by two cars trying to avoid hitting each other. The cars were successful in avoiding each other, but both hit Reed's vehicle. The collision resulted in Reed having to be extricated from his vehicle and transported to Athens Regional Medical Hospital. "Vehicle No. 1 was attempting to cross State Route 10 (Highway 78) from Roe Road when vehicle No. 2 was traveling west on SR 10. They saw each other at the same time and veer away to avoid hitting each other," said Cpl. RW Thacker from Georgia State Patrol. A Wreck on Highway 78 at Troy Smith Road in Monroe on Monday morning injured three people and resulted in one extrication.

Officials confirm that a wreck on Highway 78 at Troy Smith Road in Monday injured three people. One person had to be extricated. Georgia State Patrol will provide details once report is complete.

UPDATE: 3 Injured in Wreck on Youth-Monroe Road Wednesday

A 9-year-old was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for treatment and both drivers involved were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center.

UPDATE: According to a spokesman with the Georgia State Patrol, three were injured in a crash that occurred at the intersection of Youth-Monroe and Ho Hum Hollow at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday. A Ford Escape being driven by Gaye Fishburn, 62, from Monroe attempted to make a left turn onto Youth-Monroe from Ho Hum Hollow and turned into the path of a Honda Accord. The Honda was being driven by Cynthia Cole, 38, from Monroe, GSP reports. Both drivers were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment.  A passenger in the Honda, 9-year-old Levi Cole, was airlifted to CHOA Egleston for treatment.  A 2-year-old riding in a child safety seat was not injured. Fishburn was charged with failing to yield while turning left and Cole was charged with a seat …

Pedestrian Hit In Accident on Highway 20

Georgia State Patrol confirms that victim was airlifted for medical help.

One injury was reported in car-pedestrian crash on Friday night around 8:10 p.m. at Miller Bottom and GA 20; a helicopter was called for transport of the injured pedestrian.  The accident occured near the Hidden Creek Subdivision on Highway 20 just west of the intersection with Miller Bottom Road and Rosebudy Road. Traffic was stopped in both directions; per a witness, it was cleared shortly after 9:15 p.m. Patch will keep you updated as information is made available.

Monroe Man Faces Charges in Motorcycle Fatality

George Latimore, 54, of Monroe died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday afternoon. Georgia State Patrol said charges are pending against a 23-year-old Monroe man involved in the collision.

George Latimore, 54, died at Grady Hospital in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon after a motorcycle wreck on Youth Monroe Road, south of Loganville. A spokesman with Georgia State Patrol said the driver of the other vehicle involved in the collission, Nicholas Seth Clark, 23, also of Monroe, will face charges in connection with the accident. According to the GSP, Latimore was traveling west on Youth Monroe Road on his motorcycle and a Hyundai Elantra, driven by Clark, was eastbound. Clark was stopped, preparing to make a left turn into a driveway, and turned in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle hit the car in the right rear fender. Monroe Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident Saturday

The accident occurred on Youth-Monroe Road, south of Loganville.

A Monroe man died in a motorcycle accident on Youth-Monroe Road on Saturday afternoon. According to a spokesman with the Georgia State Patrol, the crash was between a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle. Troopers were called to the scene on Youth Monroe Road near Ho Hum Hollow at about 3 p.m. The motorcycle operator, George Latimore, 54, was airlifted to Grady Hospital in Atlanta, but did not survive his injuries.  According to a witness, both lanes of Youth Monroe were shut down while the victim was being treated. GSP and Walton County Fire/Rescue and EMS were on the scene It is not clear at this time whether any charges will be filed. According to GSP, the accident is still under investigation.

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Wrecks in Walton County, Charged with DUI

Wreck happened at Ga Highway 81 and Double Springs Road in Walton County.

Georgia State Patrol reported that a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy vehicle was involved in a wreck at 1:20 a.m. this morning on Georgia Highway 81 at Double Springs Road in Walton County. According to the trooper, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department vehicle ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned several times.  In a press release, GSP reported that nobody was around the vehicle when first responders arrived. They later located the driver, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy, at his residence. He had sustained minor injuries. A female passenger was found walking near the crash scene. An Accident in Monroe Monday Injures Loganville man

A 20-year-old Loganville man was taken to Clearview Regional Medical Center with head injuries on Monday following a wreck on Highway 78.

A crash that occurred around 3:45 p.m. Monday in Monroe sent a 20-year-old Loganville man to the hospital. According to Gordy Wright, public information officer with the Georgia State Patrol, Christopher Cody Nix was taken to Clearview Regional Medical Center with a head injury following the two car accident. Nix was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer. He was charged with failing to maintain lane, seat belt violation and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Wright said the second vehicle involved was a 2004 Dog Ram truck driven by Paul Austin Nichols, 27, of Hoschton. He was transported to Clearview Regional Medical Center with abrasions.
