Purple Hurricanes, Bulldogs crush opposition to advance in playoffs
It was a great night for Monroe's playoff teams. From the onset, there was never any doubt in either game as to who would win. The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes advance to the State Semi-finals for Division AAAA with a resounding 47-8 win over the South Effingham Mustangs. The 'Canes showed Cat 5 strength early, scoring 31 of those points in the first half. Solid defense throughout the game kept Mustangs at bay, allowing only 8 points very late in the game. The George Walton Academy Bulldogs fared just as well tonight. They travelled to Marietta to face the Walker School Wolverines in Division A (Private) round 2 action. Playoff games tonight for Monroe Area and George Walton
This Season, Purple Hurricane football has not been for the faint of heart. Last week's playoff game against Grady High School (Atlanta) was no exception. Monroe Area won the game by one point in overtime. The 21-20 victory gives them home field advantage over the South Effingham Mustangs. The AAAA 3-A champs defeated Westover High (Albany) 41-28 last week to advance to tonight's game. The George Walton Academy Bulldogs defeated Aquinas (Augusta) 38-12 last week and advance to Round II of the GHSA Divsion A (Private) Playoffs. Tonight they will Travel to Marietta to take on Walker Academy. Walker knocked off Athens Christian Academy last week by a score of 28-7 to advance. Grayson Rams finish the 2012 Season with a disappointing 28-10 loss to North Gwinnett.
Grayson finishes the season 10-2-0 with their stunning Friday night loss to North Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAA playoffs. Beginning their season nationally ranked as No. 2, the Rams went into the game favored to make their way to an opportunity for a 2nd Championship. Experiencing an unprecedented 8 fumbles and 13 penalties, Grayson found themselves on the receiving end of far too many kick-offs throughout the evening. North Gwinnett proved themselves to be a worthy opponent. Capitalizing on the turnovers the Bulldogs dominated the 2nd half of the game for a 28-10 win over the Rams. LCA's Lions complete year undefeated as State Champions - Monroe Area and George Walton Academy still in the hunt.
The Loganville Christian Academy Lions have ended their season at the top. Last week, the Lions defeated Community Christian School of Stockbridge 29-18 to become State Champions. The Lions end their season undefeated through the regular season and added three wins during the playoffs. The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes (10-1, 6-1)advance to round two in the AAAA playoffs with a 21-14 win last week against Shaw High School (Columbus, Ga) They will face AAAA-6B champs The Grady Knights (Atlanta). Grady is 9-2, and advanced by defeating River Ridge (Woodstock) last week by a score of 27-17. GHSA regular season is over; area teams gear up for round one of playoffs. The LCA Lions already have two wins in post season play under their belts.
Independent League Loganville Christian Academy Lions roar into round three of their playoffs with a Saturday game tomorrow against Community Christian School of Stockbridge. Last week they bested round II Challengers Calvary Christian by a score of 35-13 Division A will begin playoff action next week, with 8-A teams earning spots. the Athens Academy Spartans, George Walton Academy Bulldogs, Athens Christian Academy Eagles and Prince Avenue Christian School Wolverines all will begin playoffs next Friday, November 23. Team falls short of playoffs and season finale is rained out.
It was supposed to be a beautiful Labor Day at the ol' ball park. The game was switched from a night game to a day game. But mother nature had other plans. The Gwinnett Braves came into Monday's finale at home just one game out of the playoffs. And needing a Syracuse victory over Lehigh Valley to force a one-game playoff game with the Iron Pigs, Gwinnett had to wait almost two hours before finding out Lehigh had defeated Syracuse 4-1 in a rain shortened game knocking the Braves out of the playoffs. It wasn't official until the bottom of the first inning after Lehigh and Syracuse waited 45 minutes. Then the Braves had their own rain problems and after a 1-hour and 59-minutes delay, and the Braves trailing 2-1 got hit by another rain fall …
