On July 31, or in a subsequent runoff, one of four candidates will be the commissioner-elect for Gwinnett County's Commission District 3. The successful candidate will take up the office in January 2013. Current incumbent, Commissioner Mike Beaudreau, faces challenges from former mayor of Snellville Jerry Oberholtzer and two newcomers, Mike Korom and Tommy Hunter.  Dacula Patch has covered this race extensively and provides the following information on the four candidates: Take our poll and let us know which one of these candidates you feel deserves your vote on July. 31.

District 3 Commission Candidates Answer Your Questions

The four candidates for Gwinnett County Commission District 3 answer questions submitted by Patch readers.

Next month, voters in Gwinnett County District 3 will decide if Mike Beaudreau, Jerry Oberholtzer, Tommy Hunter or Mike Korom will serve as the area's next county commissioner. Since Beaudreau, Oberholtzer, Hunter and Korom are all running as Republicans and there are no Democratic challengers, the race will be decided during the July 31 primary. The runoff, if necessary, will be held on Aug. 21. The deadline to register to vote in the primary is July 2. Dacula Patch asked each of the candidates to answer a series of questions relating to current political issues. The questionnaires were based in part on questions submitted by readers. Dacula Patch did not limit the length of the responses. Each candidate's answers are presented unedited …

Candidates Square off at Dacula Forum

Mike Beaudreau, Jerry Oberholtzer, Mike Korom and Tommy Hunter attempt to win over voters during two-hour question and answer session.

Being the incumbent can be tough. After eight years as the District 3 Gwinnett County Commissioner, incumbent Mike Beaudreau has made a number of decisions which challengers Jerry Oberholtzer, Tommy Hunter and Mike Korom were eager to question during a June 14 candidate forum at Stars and Strikes in Dacula. Each candidate was given the opportunity to ask two questions of another candidate. Five of the six questions asked by Hunter, Korom and Oberholtzer were directed at Beaudreau -- most calling the incumbent’s bona fides as a fiscal conservative into question. Hunter asked how Beaudreau could support the county trash plan based on conservative principles. “How do you rectify in your mind taking away the right of the residents to choose …

Well he just might or might not... (Smiles) BUT it’s been a good “schoolin” for all involved not the least of which is the voter... Here's to a better turnout than 2008! And maybe NEXT year, whoever wins could recommend the podium speakers at the monthly BOC meetings could get a little more than three minutes. NOT all citizens are polished public speakers.   more ›

Changes in Store for Gwinnett County BOC

District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter will not seek re-election, citing health reasons and the field is filling up to take on District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau in his re-election bid.

The Gwinnett Board of Commission race is beginning to heat up with several candidates already throwing their hats into the ring. With the announcement of District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter that she won't seek re-election, it is guaranteed that there will be at least one new commissioner on the board next year. Other candidates could emerge, but as of now, the Gwinnett BOC will have a new member with a strong financial background next year. This development arose Monday when Lasseter announced that she won't seek re-election, citiing health reasons. Her district includes Duluth and Suwanee. "I had been considering it for a while because of my health and I had been in the hospital twice in the past year," Lasseter told Patch on Monday …

Oberholtzer Makes Official District 3 Bid

Former mayor of Snellville says he doesn't want to complain about problems, but "offer real solutions."

(Editor's Note: This article is taken from a press release from Jerry Oberholtzer's campaign.) Jerry Oberholtzer, who served 12 successful years as city councilman and mayor of Snellville, will bring his governmental experience and savvy into the race for Gwinnett County commissioner representing the third district that stretches from Braselton, through Dacula and Snellville, to the DeKalb County line at Stone Mountain. Oberholtzer, 52, and Roxann, his wife of 30 years, have lived in the district for 29 years -- almost their entire married life. They have three sons, Jerry and Matthew, both Clemson University graduates and Paul, a graduate of North Georgia State College and University. Son Jerry and (his) wife, Jessie, have the Oberholtzer…

Todd, I stand on my record of tax cuts and service upgrades in Snellville over the past 12 years. Considering the economic downturn we've all experienced, I believe Snellville today is better than it was when I first took office. I also believe local government experience is very important to what we're trying to accomplish on the county level. District 3 encompasses all or parts of six different…   more ›

Oberholtzer to Run for Gwinnett Commission Seat

Jerry Oberholtzer, former mayor of Snellville, said he has paperwork ready to file and will be seeking the Gwinnett County District 3 Commission seat.

After being termed out of his position as mayor of Snellville in November, Jerry Oberholzter confirmed that he will be seeking the Gwinnett County District 3 Commission seat in 2012. "I did stand up at the Republican Breakfast last week and let them know that I would be running for this office and I've formed a committee and prepared the paperwork," Oberholzer said. "I will be making a formal announcement next week." Oberholzer served on the Snellville City Council for four years before serving two terms as mayor of the city. Under Snellville's City Charter, a mayor can only serve two terms. Incumbent District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau announced Friday that he will be seeking reelection and Mike Korom of Dacula also has announced a bid…
