Archer High's graduates will be treated with a special appearance during their graduation this week. Charles "Buck" Buchanan, the first principal of the school, will give the commencement speech. He retired in 2012, after abut 36 years in education, including leading Parkview High and Central Gwinnett High schools. Some 428 seniors are graduating from the high school, which is now in its fourth year. Of those graduates, 110 are graduating with honors. The graduation ceremony is 7 p.m., May 25, at Gwinnett Center Arena. Gwinnett County Public Schools announces names of Grayson High School's 2012-2013 valedictorian and salutatorian.
Gwinnett County Public Schools has released the names of the 2012-2013 valedictorian and salutatorian from Grayson High School. The title of valedictorian is normally given to the student with the highest GPA, and salutatorian is given to the student with the second-highest GPA. Ten local high schools made the list, including Grayson High School which ranked at No. 1943 on the list.
Ten high schools in Gwinnett County have made Newsweek's 2013 list of the nation's top schools. Newsweek released the rankings May 6. The Georgia High School Association meet was held May 2-4 in Jefferson, Ga. Mill Creek High School took top honors.
Grayson High School had a strong showing at the Boys State Track and Field Championship that took place from May 2 - 4 in Jefferson, Ga. Christian Smith got second place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.80 and the team got second in the 4x100 Relay with a time of 42.26. Jomari Collie earned sixth place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.28. The Denver Broncos' post-draft depth chart lists Smith third at right defensive end.
Quanterus Smith, who graduated from Grayson High School in 2008, was drafted in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos and is listed on the team's roster. Smith, who suffered an ACL tear toward the end of his career at Western Kentucky, should be healthy for training camp, SB Nation reports. Smith lettered for two years at Grayson High and earned First-Team All-Country honors, the Broncos' bio says. He also lettered in basketball. In 2012, he was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. "Smith has major pass-rusher burst," Bill Williamson wrote for ESPN.com. Nearly 100 Gwinnett County Public Schools students, including a scholar from Grayson High School, will spend part of their summer taking a rigorous, in-depth look at an area of their interest. The 96 students were selected as finalists for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, earning a spot in this summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors, according to a news release from Gwinnett County Schools. Representing 14 of the district’s high schools, the Gwinnett students will learn from the most qualified Georgia high school teachers. Mick Winzeler hoping to improve his top score during upcoming "Kong Off" in Denver, Colo.
A Grayson High School teacher man hopes to beat his top Donkey Kong score of 874,000 in the upcoming "Kong Off 3" to be held Nov. 15-17 in Denver, Colo. The event will feature at least 20 Donkey Kong machines and over $4,500 in cash for the winners. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, Mick Winzeler, of Buford, is among a small number of Donkey Kong players who have ever reached Level 22 in the game, also known as the "killscreen" level. The "Official Unofficial List of DK Killscreeners" on ClassicArcadeGaming.com shows Winzeler in the 37th spot on the killscreener list. Two 14-year-old Grayson boys play on the Atlanta Phoenix Bantam Majors Ice Hockey team that won first place in the USA Hockey National Championships played in Charlotte, NC, at the beginning of April.
Two 14-year old Grayson boys, Cael Cernich and Brandon Reidy, were on the team that brought home the winning trophy from the USA Hockey Championships at the beginning of April. The team that brought home the win is the Atlanta Phoenix Bantam Majors, a travel ice hockey team that practices and plays at the IceForum in Duluth. "These boys have been playing ice hockey for the past eight years, and after all of their hard work they have finally attained the highest achievement possible in USA Hockey," said head coach Bobby Cernich.
