It's Gone! The Coach Has No Hair

Joe Palmer, coach of the West Walton Rec. Team 12 U Knights, stuck to his word and his team's undefeated season cost him his hair.

At the beginning of the season, Joe Palmer, coach of the West Walton Softball Rec. Team 12 U Knights, promised to allow the team members to shave his head if they finished the season undefeated. They did - and he stuck to his word. Tuesday was the last game of the regular season and the 12 U Knights went into it undefeated. However, it was rained out, so they didn't even have to play. "There are only really 12 games, but they add two in case of rain outs," said Kim Palmer, team mom and wife of the coach. "We had already won 12 games, so when it was rained out we were declared the champions anyway." The coach didn't balk from his commitment. As soon as the rain cleared, he took his seat on field 8 at West Walton Park ballfields and one by …

Smoltz To Sign Book at Coolray

The former Atlanta Braves pitcher will be signing copies of his new book.

Another Atlanta Braves icon will be appearing at Coolray Field soon. John Smoltz, former pitching star who could earn a spot in the Hall of Fame, will be signing copies of his book on Friday, May 25, 6-7:30 p.m. It is part of the Gwinnett Public Library Meet the Author series. "Smoltzie" has joined the author circuit with his book "Starting and Closing: Perseverance, Faith and One More Year." “It’s wonderful that the library can help welcome back John Smoltz as he begins a new chapter in his amazing career, this time as a best-selling author,”  Gwinnett County Public Library Executive Director Nancy Stanbery-Kellam said in a news release.  “We love when we can bring both history and new beginnings to our community in unexpected places.  …

Team's Success to Cost Walton County Softball Coach His Hair

Following Tuesday's game, West Walton 12 U Softball Rec. Team coach Joe Palmer is expecting an extreme hair cut.

At the beginning of the season, Joe Palmer, coach of the West Walton Softball Rec. Team 12 U Knights, made a pact with his team. He promised to allow them to shave his hair if they finished the season undefeated. He's figured he's about to lose his hair. The Knights go into the last game tonight at 13-0. "When they win it all they get to shave my head on field 8 at West Walton Park," Palmer said. But he doesn't seem to mind the extreme haircut. "These girls are just amazing - I have a good feeling that my head will be shaved. Every time we win they tell me that they are getting closer to shaving it, so it is going to be a good time for them I am sure." The final game will begin at 6 p.m. at West Walton Park in Loganville. The hair …

More Questions Arise Over West Walton Booster Club

Controversy over alleged theft and fraud has left members of the West Walton Football and Booster Club unclear about what will happen at the beginning of the new season.

The arrest last year of Amber Dowell, 31, the former president of West Walton Football and Cheerleading Booster Club in Loganville, has left many confused as what will happen when the football season starts back up. Dowell, a Snellville resident, is charged with credit card fraud and other charges linked to funds belonging to the booster club. She was arrested a second time in January this year after she allegedly tried to pass herself off as a representative of the club in December in an attempt to obtain $5,000 worth of toys from Toys for Tots. Crystal Carter, treasurer of the booster club and co-signee on all the booster club accounts, is the person who exposed both the credit card fraud as well as the alleged Toys for Tots scam. But …

Baseball is a time-honored tradition where every live pitch, smack of a glove or crack of a bat floods my senses with memories of moments shared alongside loved ones separated now by distance or astral plane. An evening flight over the Heartland, revealing the diamond glow of rural ballfields offers the most assuring comfort that, as Americans, we're still on the right track.   more ›

Ballerinas and Baseball

On April 15, Gwinnett Ballet Theater took to the field.

(Editor's Note: This article comes from a press release from Gwinnett Ballett Theatre.) The combination of baseball and ballerinas might sound like an unusual mix, but on Sunday, April 15, at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, the combination hit a home run. The Gwinnett Braves Foundation gave Snellville-based Gwinnett Ballet Theatre (GBT) a grant in December 2011 in support of its Shiloh Dance Project. The program allows elementary school students to enjoy a full education in dance over 16 weeks during the school year. To celebrate this donation, the Gwinnett Braves invited the ballet company to its opening Sunday game against the Durham Bulls. During the game, the ballet company received a check for $1,000, as well as acknowledgment of the …

Two for the Record Books for Bay Creek Archery Team

Bay Creek Elementary School is sending two teams to the World Archery Championship this year for a shot at making it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

After doing well at the regional and state level earlier this year, Bay Creek Elementary School is sending its two teams to the World Archery Championships in Louisville, KY, on May 11 and 12. “This year has been very exciting for our teams,” said Chad McGaughey, BCES PE teacher and archer coach. “On March 21, the teams travelled to Perry, Ga. for the NASP (National Archery In Schools Program) tournament and finished 2nd and 4th with two teams.” The scores were high enough to qualify both teams for the world tournament next month – a huge event with more than 8,000 participants. In fact, so big that the Guinness Book of World Records will be in attendance to see if the event qualifies as a new world record. “This will be the largest …

Pro Golf May Return To Gwinnett

Champions Tour is the possible visitor, officials say.

Gwinnett County may see a pro golf tour stop again after an absence of several years. Gwinnett tourism officials are discussing with the PGA Tour on getting a tournament in the county, and may release information at the end of April. It likely would be a Champions Tour event, which is for pro golfers at least 50 years old. "It would be great to get this tournament here in Gwinnett," said Stan Hall of the Gwinnett Sports Commission. The tour stop likely would be at the TPC Sugarloaf course in Duluth, which hosted the regular PGA Tour event through 2008. The event left because of the lack of a title sponsor. The Champions Tour includes some very recognizable names. Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples and Tom Kite are among the leaders in the …

I'd love to see the Champions Tour in Gwinnett. I loved going to TPC Sugarloaf for the old tournament, and I would get a kick out of being able to see some of the more seasoned pros tee it up. But I'm with you, Mr. Ron - the price of stuff is outta hand.   more ›
