The scores are among the top in the nation.
Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) fifth graders have traditionally excelled on state writing tests, ranking Gwinnett elementary students among the top in the state. The school system's average passing rate was 93 percent, an increase over last year's average. Of particular interest, according to a recent press release, is the success of Gwinnett students in scoring at the highest performance level. Twenty-four percent of Gwinnett students scored in the “Exceeds” performance level compared to eleven percent statewide. This represents an increase of two percentage points over the previous year’s results in this highest performance level at a local level. Congratulations to all high scoring fifth graders.

The title of valedictorian is normally given to the student with the highest GPA, and salutatorian is given to the student with the second-highest GPA. Valedictorian Elizabeth Wood, daughter of Robert and Elaine Wood, will attend Georgia Institute of Technology. Her intended major is biochemistry, and she plans to pursue a career as a pediatrician. She has received or been offered the Maxxis International USA scholarship. Wood was the most promising science student her junior year. Gwinnett County Public Schools releases names of South Gwinnett High School's valedictorian and salutatorian.
Gwinnett Public Schools released today the names of the valedictorian and salutatorian from South Gwinnett High School. The title of valedictorian is normally given to the student with the highest GPA, and salutatorian is given to the student with the second-highest GPA. Valedictorian Jasper Tseng, son of Gen-Lee Long Huan-Cheng Tseng, will attend Duke University. His intended major is chemistry, and he plans to pursue a career as a doctor. Currently 9,843 students are scheduled to graduate next week from the Gwinnett County Public School system.
Gwinnett County Public Schools will graduate nearly 10,000 high school seniors next week according to senior report for the Class of 2012. Currently 9,843 students are scheduled to graduate and a large portion of those will finish with honors. J. Alvin Wilbanks, CEO and Superintendent reports that this is the largest class of seniors in the history of the school system as well as one of the most accomplished groups. Couch Middle School is one of the four schools that will receive a salad bar donated by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation.
The Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation has donated four salad bars to four Gwinnett County Public Schools to help enhance the meal options available to students. This gesture is part of the organization's "Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools" effort. Currently the organization had provided salad bars to fifteen Georgia Schools including four from Gwinnett: Knight Elementary, Berkmar Middle, Couch Middle and Buice School. In all, the program has awarded salad bars to over 1,200 schools across the country. The "Let's Move Salad Bars to Schools" is a national effort to increase the quantity and selection of fruit and vegetables in school lunchrooms. The class of 2012 is Georgia Gwinnett College's largest so far.
After years of hard work, nearly 200 men and women received the fruits of their labor. Georgia Gwinnett College handed out diplomas to their largest class so far Friday morning. In all, 197 members of the class of 2012 made the walk across the quad to celebrate commencement. “As we pass the four-year mark for our first, smaller freshman classes of 2007-09, we will begin graduating much larger groups of students,” said GGC President Daniel J. Kaufman in a release. In the young school's first five and a half years, they presented degrees to 500 graduates as of December 2011. The class of 2012 increased the number of alumni by 40 percent. Lots of fun and lots of sun for those attending Snellville Days on opening day.
The opening day of the 39th annual Snellville Days parade and festival brought a steady stream of people to both downtown and Briscoe Park. Patch was there to capture some of the actions in photo and video on May 5, 2012. This year's theme is "Proud to Be..." To see video of the parade, click here. The fun continues on Sunday, May 6, as the festival moves into its second day. Be sure to catch the dozens of vendors, including businesses, arts and crafts and local nonprofits today, in addition to the special kiddie field and entertainment stages. Event organizers estimate that upwards of 25,000 to 30,000 people attend the two-day event. The festival goes on today noon to 5 p.m. at Briscoe Park, off Lenora Church Road.

The annual festival kicked off with a parade through the downtown Snellville area on May 5, 2012.
The two-day Snellville Days event began with a parade Saturday morning through the streets of the downtown area. More than 80 groups, including local politicians, businesses and charities participated in the parade. Loganville resident Jordan Rager, of NBC's "The Voice, was the parade Grand Marshall. The festivities kick off Saturday morning with a parade, and then the fun continues all weekend.
The 39th annual Snellville Days parade and festival takes place this weekend, May 5-6, and everyone is invited. Activities begin with a parade featuring group floats, live performers, four marching bands, mascots including Chopper and Maximus, clowns, stilt walkers, motorcycles, politicians, cheerleaders, beauty queens and much more. Music by the parade's Grand Marshall Jordan Rager from NBC's "The Voice" will be played.
