Did Georgia Do The Right Thing in Rejecting Common Core Testing?

Common Core is a national standard in education that is being encouraged for all states.

Georgia leaders announced this week that the state will not offer the new standardized testing that is tied to the Common Core principles.

According to a story in the AJC, Gov. Nathan Deal and Georgia Department of Education Superintendent John Barge have cited the high cost as a major reason for opting out. The cost is reported to be $27 million, which is higher than the state's entire K-12 testing budget.

Officials said that Georgia could create an equally rigorous test measurement at a more reasonable price. Barge also cited fears that the test could limit the state's ability to create its own curriculum. According to the AJC article, this is in keeping with a growing unease across the country that Common Core represents a national takeover of public education.

What do you think? Did the state do the right thing by rejecting the Common Core testing at this time?Β
