"First, I want to say that I sincerely appreciate the awesome job our Walton County Sheriff's Dept. and Loganville Police Dept. do on a day to day basis protecting and serving Walton and Loganville. "To these Men and Women, who put themselves in harm's way each day, I am truly grateful!" In the case of WCSD, these deputies have one of the largest counties in the state to patrol sometimes having to come from across the county to respond to a call. They arrive as soon as safely possible and each one I have had the pleasure to meet have treated me with the utmost respect and very Professionally.
But, ultimately, each individual is responsible for the safety and defense of himself, his family and his Neighborhood. Most citizens do not realize this point. Some will undoubtedly disagree with this article and that is fine with me. I am not posting Blogs on here to be popular by any means. I post to raise awareness, education and information that I believe will make our county a safer one. Within a 6 mile radius of where I live, there are 17 Sexual Offenders living. You can go on the Walton County GIS and see for yourself how many live near your home. These days, home invasions are becoming commonplace in the cities and it will probably be a matter of time before we are faced with it here. Nutjobs like the Colorado shooter can rise up anytime and anywhere. Do NOT think it cannot happen here. With the bad economy, lack of jobs and just people of Evil Intent envious of what others have, crime is a stark reality, even in a Rural setting. The most ignorant mindset one can have in this day and time is..."It won't ever happen to me!" Criminals, most of the time, pick and choose who they are going to assault. I know there are crimes of opportunity, but that is not what I am discussing in this article. Criminals intentionally look for people who are "preoccupied" with texting on their phones, listening to their music on their IPods or other distractions. Situational Awareness is not very prevalent until people get a "wake up call" like the one in Colorado. We all make choices everyday. Choices concerning our behavior, to be aware or not. There are many articles online about SA. Most will choose not to spend the time to read these, raising their awareness and understanding about this issue that could in reality, save your's or another's life. If they do not already have one, I would like to see WCSD provide a weapons training self defense class. I would "choose" to do so. I encourage each citizen that may legally do so, to purchase a weapon, learn to shoot responsibly and defend yourself, because you may save your life or a family member's one day. The bottom line is. "We Are Responsible for Our Own Safety and Protection"
