Loganville Christian Academy Advances to Second Round

The LCA Lions sweep the Cavaliers of Mount de Sales to move into the second round of the GISA AAA state baseball playoffs.

Coach Vince Kirkland took his Lions into the weekend boasting a 17-4 record and ready to make a run in the playoffs. The Lions took on the Cavaliers of Mount de Sales out of  Macon at Lions Field in .

Game one on Friday afternoon saw the Lions send starter Spencer Earle to the mound. LCA fell behind early and found themselves trailing 6-1 after three innings.

The Lions began to cut into the lead in the fourth, scoring one in the fourth and picked up another run in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3 after five.

In the sixth inning the Lions offense exploded scoring seven runs to take the lead. Spencer Earle singled in the inning driving in two runs to give the Lions a 7-6 lead. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of center fielder Marshall Dreyer who blasted a three run homer over the center field wall giving LCA a 10-6 lead going into the final inning.

The Cavaliers cut into the lead in the seventh on a two run home run, but the Lions pitching and defense shut down the Cav's to preserve the game one win.

"We didn't play well and fell behind early, but I'm proud of the way we battled back to give ourselves a chance to win", said. LCA coach Vince Kirkland.

With the win LCA would go into Saturday's action needing to win just one more victory to advance to the second round.

During Saturday's game two, LCA sent Austin Latham to the mound. The Lions fell behind early, giving up two runs in the first to trail 2-0. The Lions offense scratched out two runs in the top of the second and after two the score was tied 2-2.

Mount de Sales took the lead again scoring three times in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.Senior Matt Kirkland came in in relief in the bottom of the third to get the final out. Kirkland pitched the next three frames not allowing any runs to keep LCA close.

LCA clawed closer in the sixth inning picking up two runs, bringing the Lions to within one 5-4 going into the final inning.

 The Lions came to the plate in the top of the seventh needing one run to tie the game. After getting runners on,  Austin Latham sacrificed to score Matt Lype to tie the game. Marshall Dreyer and Harrison Tobin followed up with hits to drive in two  runs to give the Lions a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Coach Kirkland brought in game one starter Spencer Earle in the seventh to shut down the Cavaliers. The Cav's had runners on first and second when Earle recorded a strike out to get the second out. The game ended when right fielder Drew Sewell hauled in a long drive to record the third out and give the Lions the 7-5 victory.

With the two game weekend sweep of Mount de Sales the Lions advanced to the second round of the playoffs and will go on the road to take on the winner of the Westfield Academy verses Trinity Christian series. Round two action will begin on May 13 and go into the weekend.
