On Friday, January 25 from 6-7:30pm, AMAI Karate in Loganville is proud to present a Capoeira Seminar taught by their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA Instructor, Mr. Alex Daltro.
"Capoeira is a unique Martial Art that combines dance, music, percussion, song, self-defense, and acrobatics. The art developed as an expression of resistance among the descendants of African slaves in Brazil influenced by the native culture as well, bringing a sense of emotional empowerment through music and song while concealing the combative purpose of Capoeira, according to Mr. Daltro, the word Capoeira refers to the low bushes and vegetation in the Brazilian interior. The slaves who developed the art in secret used techniques which keep the body low, concealed by this vegetation. The techniques could also be disguised as a dance if the “boss” caught sight of those practicing the art.
One of the oldest known Capoeira registries in Brazil is in Mr. Daltro's home city of Salvador. When he speaks about Capoeira - the way of dressing, the movements, the music, the belt – his passion for the art is clear. In Brazil, he is well-known as a Capoeira practitioner, achieving the rank of the number one practitioner in his country. He began the art when he was 12, in 1989. The group Mr. Daltro is part of has 19 belt levels, and he is 17th.
Mr. Daltro has been AMAI Karate's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA Instructor for about 3 1⁄2 years. He was introduced to AMAI Sensei and school owner, Mr. Justin Garner, by a mutual friend. Mr. Daltro says how impressed he was with the energy of the school and its students, and was passionate to share his knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with everyone. In addition to his extensive experience in Capoeira, Mr. Daltro is a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is a Pro MMA fighter. He says he is pleased with how open the students are at AMAI Karate, and how they share his excitement for learning and keeping open minds in developing their technique and their healthy lifestyles.
