Who Are the Grayson Rams?

Here's what they're saying in Raider country! Walton's opposition in Saturday's state championship game is unbeaten and comes from Gwinnett. Need we say more?

They are the latest powerhouse to come out of Gwinnett County, but the Grayson Rams are not exactly an upstart.

Like the Walton Raiders, whom they'll meet Saturday night for the Georgia Class AAAAA championship, the Rams are 14-0. One national high school poll has the Rams ranked sixth.

They've had two other close games this season, including a 7-0 win over Kell in the season opener at the Corky Kell Classic.

Their best-known player, like Walton's Tyren Jones, is a junior, defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, who's rated the top player in his class in the nation.

The Loganville school is aiming to become the fifth Gwinnett team to win a state title, while Walton is the pride of Cobb, which hasn't won a football crown since Marietta in 1967.

Grayson reached the semifinals in 2008 and 2010, and in last week's semifinal against Colquitt County, scored the go-ahead touchdown with 28 seconds remaining to claim a 35-31 win.

The school opened in 2000 and took its lumps against the likes of Gwinnett powers Parkview, Brookwood and South Gwinnett for several years.

Their coach since the beginning has been Mickey Conn, who hailed from South Gwinnett.

So the longevity of his tenure there is much like that of the Walton staff
