Six Lady Rams Head To College On Soccer Scholarships

Friday six graduating seniors from Grayson High School signed with colleges on soccer scholarships.

The soccer season might be over for the lady Rams of Grayson, but for six of the graduating seniors, their careers are just getting started.

Friday was a day of celebration at as Mary Vernetti, Kalysea Lovan, Molly Williams, Hadrian Plott, Shayna Rogers and Erin Griffin each signed with a college having earned scholarships as a result of their participation in soccer.

“I believe all of them are getting partial scholarships, usually half tuition and books,” said lady Rams soccer coach Terry Klinect. “This year was the most signees we have had with the girls program. With playing in a very tough region in AAAAA schools, they were able to beat some of the top teams in the state.”

“I was really happy to get the scholarship,” Williams said. “It was shock - especially that I got into a Div. 1 school.”

Griffin, who will be attending Georgia College and State University, said she too began playing soccer at a young age.

“I’ve been playing since I was 5,” Griffin said. “I've always wanted to play soccer in college – it’s been my dream.”

Griffin said she is considering a career in sports medicine.

Vernetti will be attending North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C., Lovan has signed with Emory Oxford, Plott with Georgia Southwestern University and Rogers with Piedmont College.

Klinect said while he is sorry to lose these players, he feels lucky the lady Rams have a good JV program.

“Some other girls will step up to the challenge for next season from our current returning varsity plays,” Klinect said, adding he also has a couple of good incoming freshman who he believes will also make an impact.

“Grayson girls soccer has a long tradition for being competitive each year and I do not see that changing over the next several years,” Klinect said. ”We are blessed with the talent that Grayson has been getting for the last 10 years.”
