Miss South Gwinnett High Earns Top Scholarship

South Gwinnett High School student and winner of Miss South Gwinnett High, Shakori Danielle Fletcher, of Grayson, Ga., was one of two Gwinnett students to earn a top scholarship from the Georgia United Credit Union.

A South Gwinnett High School student from Grayson, Ga. was one of two Gwinnett students to earn a top scholarship from the Georgia United Credit Union (formerly Georgia Federal Credit Union.)

According to a press release from Gwinnett County Public Schools, SGHS senior Shakori Danielle Fletcher, daughter of James and Charlene Fletcher of Grayson, was first runner up, earning a $2,000 scholarship. Fletcher has been accepted at Elon University. According to GCPS, she is a is a member of the Varsity Tennis team, President of FBLA, Vice-President of the Student Council,  a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Senior Cabinet, a Peer Mentor and Miss South Gwinnett High.  

Gwinnett officials said this is the 18th year that Georgia United Credit Union has awarded the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and the 5th year for the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship totaling $200,000 in scholarships. Recipients are chosen based on academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in school and community activities a well as an essay competition.

This year, the credit union awarded a total of $12,500 through the organization’s Vernon E. Carne Scholarship program and the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship program disbursed to thirteen high school seniors. Karl-Mary Akre of Peachtree Ridge High, first place winner of a $3,000 scholarship, was the other GCPS student to receive this scholarship.
