Loganville Middle-Schoolers Wins National Archery In Schools Regional

Loganville Middle School took top shooting honors at the first of seven Georgia regional National Archery in the Schools Program tournaments Saturday at Loganville High School. 

Loganville Middle shot a team score of 3,213 to top 11 other competing schools and win the overall high-scoring team award at Georgia-NASP Regional No. 1. Loganville Middle won the middle school division to qualify for the 7th annual Georgia-NASP State Tournament April 8 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. 

Bay Creek Elementary School in Loganville captured the elementary division crown with a team score of 3,112. Lafayette Christian School from LaGrange won the high school division with a team score of 2,850. Both teams receive an automatic bid to the state tournament by winning their respective division at regionals. 

Individually, Loganville Middle’s Parker Kimery was awarded the overall highest scoring male champion with a score of 288 (out of a perfect 300). The overall highest scoring female champion was Loganville Middle’s Kamra King, who fired a 265. 

Other top individual shooters included: Bay Creek Elementary’s Parker McGaughey (285, top elementary school male); Bay Creek Elementary’s Maya Wilson and Madeline Robison (264, top elementary school female); and Lafayette Christian’s Natalie D’Alesio (265, top high school female). 

More than 225 students in elementary, middle and high school competed at Georgia-NASP Regional No. 1 in Loganville. Other competing schools were Bethlehem Elementary, Walnut Grove Elementary, Sola Fide Christian, Woodlawn Elementary, Thomson Middle, Youth Elementary, Loganville Elementary and Victory Baptist. Schools that did not win their division and an automatic berth to state at the regional tournament can still be selected as a high-scoring wildcard team after the final regional tournament is completed March 1. Wildcard standings will be posted at www.georgiawildlife.com/NASP along with regional, state and national tournament rules, regulations, and more. 

More than 1,400 student archers have registered to compete in the seven regional Georgia-NASP tournaments held Feb. 1-March 1. The remaining regional tournaments will be held in Leesburg (Feb. 8), Chatsworth (Feb. 8), Wrightsville (Feb. 15), Demorest (Feb. 22), Valdosta (March 1) and Fort Valley (March 1).

The National Archery in the Schools Program is an in-school archery curriculum that meets all education department standards. Only schools that are certified in NASP through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are qualified to compete in the Georgia Tournament. Schools in more than 100 counties in Georgia are NASP certified.

The program promotes instruction in international-style target archery to improve educational performance and participation in shooting sports.  Research has shown that the program, administered through a minimum two-week course during the school year, improves class attendance and behavior.
