LHS Swim Team Improves Times at State Meet

Mattix finishes in the Top 10 in state

The Loganville High School swim team saved their best for last as they competed in the State Swim Meet held on Feb. 10th (Preliminaries) and 11th (Finals) at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. This year the State Meet included 105 schools from class AAAA-A with over 600 swimmers in attendance. The Red Devils swam in 10 total events in the Preliminaries, 4 relays and 6 individual events, and had best times in 7 of the 10 events. In addition, three school records were set and two of the swims qualified for the State “A” Finals (Top 8). Overall, the LHS girls finished 21st and the team finished 32nd out of 105 in the State Meet.

Individual highlights for the girls included, senior Alaina Mattix who reset her own LHS records and made State “A” Finals by placing in the top 8 for both the 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle with times of 52.29 and 24.10 respectively. Mattix swam in the Finals and completed her decorated LHS career by placing 4th in the 100-yard freestyle and 6th in the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Blayke Kortman also swam two events. She finished the 100-yard freestyle with a season best time of 57.64 and the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.10. For the boys, Junior Alandas McGraw qualified for State in the 500-yard freestyle and finished with a season best time of 5:17.68. Sophomore Sully Harris also qualified for State and swam in the 100-yard backstroke. He finished with a time of 59.92.

In the relay competition, the boys relay of Davis Vincent, Alandas McGraw, Sully Harris and Josh Torres competed in both in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The boys finished the medley relay with a time of 1:50.03 and finished 35th.  While in the 400 free relay, the boys dropped 4 seconds finished with a season best time of 3:41.75 and placed 38th .

For the girls, the 200-yard medley relay of Lauren Bowen, Blayke Kortman, Chelsea Roberts and Alaina Mattix broke the LHS school record with a time of 2:03.25 and placed 28th. The girls 400-yard free relay of Jessie Fortner, Roberts, Kortman and Mattix dropped almost 8 seconds finished with a season best time of 4:04.59 and placed 28th.

The Red Devils had a very successful season with eight new school records and 17 state qualifying times to their credit. This is a young and talented team with a very bright future. Alaina Mattix will be sorely missed next year as she takes her talents and leadership to the next level. This team looks forward to the challenges of next year.
