Hey, Sole Sister … and the Mister!

While celebrating the life of a close friend diagnosed with breast cancer, this group of friends helps to raise money for research.

You’ve probably seen them around. From Grayson Day booths to Pink Parties on the Patio at , the members of the Sole Sister and the Mister are determined to make their contribution to the cause of ending breast cancer.

The team is made up of a few teachers from Grayson schools and a few “moms” who met through involvement with Rams cheerleading. For Suzanne Adams, with a daughter that was off to college, she and the others were looking for a way to maintain their camaraderie while wanting to be involved in a worthy cause.

“I remembered Wendi Crawford, a former cheer board member and friend, had done the Three-Day Walk in the past,” she said.

In Atlanta, the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for a Cure event begins on Oct. 21, 2011 at Lake Lanier. The end of the 60-mile course is Turner Field two days later.

Crawford, a teacher at , became team leader. Calling upon her experience in previous walks, the team began their strategy meetings and individuals began training for the rigors of the 60 mile walk.

“Each of us definitely has our own personal reasons for walking,” said Adams. “In one of early monthly group dinner meetings, a team member and a very close personal friend, called to let us know she was going to be late to our meeting; she had just received very bad news.”

The friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer. “So now I knew exactly why God had put me in this place and at this time,” Adams said. “To support her, to educate our daughters, our community about this terrible disease and to raise money for breast cancer research!”

The newly diagnosed team member is still planning to walk. “We have all strongly encouraged her to continue her fight, to walk the 60 miles and we can all celebrate the end journey with her!” The team has also made a pact that if need be, they would push her in a wheelchair for the 60 miles from Lake Lanier to  Turner Field.

Being part of the 3-Day Walk is more than just a time and physical commitment; there is a financial requirement of $2,300 per team member. Fundraising is key!

The Sole Sisters and the Mister are doing very well and are close to meeting their personal goals. They have organized a golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24th at Collins Hill Golf Course. Tournament fees are $100 per golfer. More information is available on their website.  You can check their progress at the Three Day site

Members of the team have been training heavily in addition to fund raising. In preparation for their walk, members have been accomplishing the 20 miles per week as recommended.

“I am so looking forward to this journey, not only for a great cause, but now to support my very dear friend in her journey," Adams said. "It will certainly be a celebration for us all after the 60 miles when we walk into Turner Field!”
