Grayson Rams Kick-off Corky Kell Classic

Grayson Rams take on the Kell Longhorns at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the Georgia Dome in a rematch of last year's season opener.

The big game at today's Classic is the rematch of last year’s Grayson and Kell game. The two teams face off in the 2011 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic with the vs Kell opening the event.

Last year, the Longhorns took home the 13-10 win. This year, Rams fans are hoping for a different outcome. Despite the initial loss last year, the Rams went on to win more games over the season, and advanced further in the playoffs than the Longhorns before losing in the semifinals. Also this year, the Rams bring a strong team to the season opener including defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche. Although he’s still only a junior, Nkemdiche’s name has been floated as one of the top prospect in the 2013 recruiting season.

The Grayson Kell matchup gets under way at 11:45 a.m., but fans who haven’t made plans to head down to the Dome for the action can still catch it live on TV, courtesy of Georgia Public Broadcast.

"For 20 years now, the Metro PCS Corky Kell has been the official kickoff of the football season. It is a tremendous day with eight of the best schools in the state involved, and for the first time we will be putting them on statewide television,” said I.J. Rosenberg, sports director at GPB. “We feel with the games going on TV and the new relationship between GPB Sports and the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, these games will become one of the premier high school events in the country.''

The Grayson Kell game will be followed up at 2:30 p.m. with Brookwood vs. Lassiter, 5:30 p.m. North Gwinnett vs. McEachern and 8:30 p.m. Peachtree Ridge vs. Walton.

These are the same teams who played in last year’s Classic, but this year the match-ups are different. The games will be hosted and commentated by a variety of sports talk regulars. Games 1 and 3 will be hosted by Matt Stewart and Chuck Oliver of Comcast Sports Southeast, while GPB Sports’ Gil Tyree and Jon Nelson will take over the broadcasting booth for Games 2, while Mark Harmon provides commentary between games, and Niki Noto and Fletcher Proctor provide coverage from the sidelines.
