GCPS Make Honor Roll with College Board

Only a little more than 500 school districts nationwide made the list.

Officials with Gwinnett County Public Schools announced this week that the district has joined the list of a little more than 500 schools that made the College Boards AP District Honor Roll. They achieved this honor for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement course work while increasing the percentage for students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP exams. In all, 539 school systems in the United States and Canada received this distinction.

“We are proud of this accomplishment by our schools,” Dr. Gale Hey, Gwinnett’s associate superintendent for Teaching and Learning, said in a press release.. “Our focus has been and continues to remain on encouraging all of our students to challenge themselves with the rigor of AP opportunities. We’re pleased to learn that the College Board has noticed this, as well as the achievement of our students. It is a testament to our teachers and their efforts to provide a world-class education for students.”

Officials said the College Board’s decision to place GCPS on the 3rd Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the examination of three years of AP data, from the 2009-2010 school year to the latest AP administration during the 2011-2012 school year.

“We applaud the extraordinary efforts of the devoted teachers and administrators in these 539 districts, who are fostering rigorous work worth doing. These educators have not only expanded student access to AP course work, but they have enabled more of their students to achieve on a college level—which is helping to create a strong college-going culture,” College Board President, David Coleman, said in the release.
