Archer Gets Its First Women's Basketball Collegiate Signee

Archer High School senior Kotori Spillers signs with Andrews College in south Georgia.

April 27 turned out to be what Archer High School women’s varsity basketball coach, Ryan Lesniak, described as a “historical day.” It was the day senior Kotori Spillers became the first ever women’s basketball collegiate signee from Archer High School. Spillers signed with a small, private, two-year school known as Andrew College, located in the small city of Cuthbert in south Georgia.

“I decided to sign with Andrew College because it is one of the closest offers I got and it is located in Georgia so I can come home on the weekends if I feel like it - and they offer my major of Athletic Training,” Spillers said.

There were many other schools - especially out of state - that Spillers considered, including Midway College in Kentucky and Lindenwood University in Illinois. Signing day was extra special for Spillers who had experienced adversity in her basketball career. A torn Achilles’ tendon last March required her to undergo surgery.

“I am just happy." Spillers said. "I feel blessed because I came back from surgery and had a lot of supporting people.”

A shooting guard who has been playing basketball since the sixth grade, Spillers has become quite the ball player over the years. As a junior, Spillers scored an average of 8.0 points a game. She had four games this past season in which she scored in double figures and scored 20 points in a contest against Apalachee.

When it comes to role models in basketball, Spillers says that she looks up to the newly drafted WNBA player Maya Moore.

“I think [Moore] is awesome and she has a high GPA," Spillers said, adding "And she’s just one of the best."

However, Spillers said the WNBA is not something she sees in her future. She said she simply wants to play some (basketball) in college and then retire her jersey.
