TRIAD S.A.L.T. A Treasure Trove of Information

Monthly meeting keeps seniors in community up to date of everything that's going on.

Any senior in the community who misses the monthly . meetings is missing a treasure trove of information. S.A.L.T. stands for Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (and that’s seniors in life, not in high school.)

From a journalistic point of view, it will take me a week to get all the information to you story-by-story – but from a senior point of view, I learned more in that one hour than I’ve learned for quite a while.

I do intend to get to it, story-by-story, but in the meantime here are a few bullet points that I found of interest and I’m sure you will too.

  • The sheriff’s department S.E.R.T. unit (equivalent of S.W.A.T.) conducted a raid at 3 a.m. this morning that got a drug dealer off the streets. Way to go .
  • If you see someone driving dangerously on the streets, and manage to get the tag number, phone the WCSO H.E.A.T. Unit at 770- 266-1697 and they will follow up.
  • had a pretty quiet month but would like to remind everybody that since summer brings the growth season, now would be a good time to cut back on any foliage that might give burglars shelter while committing crimes on you property. Keep hedges under windows cut low so passing patrols can see if anything looks out of place.
  • AARP is having a driver’s education class from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the .
  • For the first time since last August, the planning and zoning board in Loganville actually got to consider a case and, if approved by the city council, there will be a new antique store coming to town soon. Also, a reminder the will have its work session at 7:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
  • Southern Plantation has Bingo the second Tuesday of the month and will soon be starting a men’s coffee club – more about these to follow!
  • Don’t forget the barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the . Proceeds help feed those in the community struggling in the current economy.
  • got the go ahead from the state for the Hard Labor Creek reservoir yesterday – more to follow about this one too.
  • Residents will get to vote in November on the Special Local Option Sales Tax – to renew the 1 cent sales already in place – and in July next year on another 1 cent, bringing the sales tax to 8 cents, for a Transportation Special Local Option Sales Tax.
  • There will be a senior health fair next week and the new hospital hopes to be open for business by the spring of 2012.
  • There are several recycling locations around the county for citizens to use – more to come about this too.

Since one of the guest speakers was Elaine Oakes, director of Keep Walton Beautiful, there was so much more information to give on litter and trash than just a few bullet point. So, along with the S.E.R.T. team operation, the hospital update, the reservoir to help boost county water efforts and the bingo and men's coffee club, I will cover most of that information in five or so additional stories in the upcoming week.

Way to go TRIAD – what a great organization.
