Trash Talk Still a Problem for Loganville Residents

Opponents of an attempt by Southern Sanitation to move to a premise on Highway 20 are mobilizing to voice their objection at Thursday's Walton County Planning Commission meeting.

Community activist Herman McCart is urging people to attend the Walton County Planning Commission meeting at 6 p.m. March 1 to speak out in opposition to Southern Sanitation's application to move to property at 5395 Highway 20 in Loganville.

"Please come out to the Meeting tonight and help us oppose this application. All desiring to do so should speak before the Board to make your individual appeal for the Board to disapprove this application," McCart said in an email rallying the troops. "Or just come and show your support by just being there. Your presence can make a difference."

Buddy Johnson of Southern Sanitation is planning to take a foreclosed property of about 3.8 acres, at 5395 Georgia Highway 20, Loganville, and use it as an office with additional outdoor storage for equipment. This would be for his business on Rosebud Road in Gwinnett County - Southern Sanitation.

According to the application, there are no plans for a transfer station at this location. It is to be used as a company office and light maintenance on the trash haulers that will be parked there when not in use. McCart is concerned about the additional traffic on Highway 20 at the McCullers Road intersection among other things.

But not everyone is opposed to the application.

"I would rather see a viable, tax paying business there than abandoned businesses (including the BP station) that attract possible rodents, other pests, & vagrants," said Loganville resident David Binder.
