The End of an Era in Grayson

The W.H. Britt house, a landmark in downtown Grayson since the early 1900s, will be just a memory by Grayson Day.

After purchasing the W.H. Britt house on the corner of Rosebud Road and Grayson Parkway in downtown , the city found renovating it would be an expensive endeavor.

“With the asbestos and a lot of termite damage, my recommendation would be to tear if down,” said Grayson Mayor Jim Hinkle. “Inside it is chopped up into many rooms.”

After purchasing it with funds from the 2009 SPLOST fund late last year, the city voted in March to tear it down and use the property as extra park space. The Britt family asked for the steps to be saved for them and the rest of the house was slated for demolition. That began about 10 days ago. Walter’s Grading got the contract for $10,900 and began the process of the piece-by-piece dismantling of a part of Grayson's history.

The city hopes to have the property completely cleared and grass seeded in time for Grayson Day on April 28.
