Simpson Takes on Broun for Georgia's 10th Congressional District

A newcomer to electoral politics, Stephen K. Simpson is challenging U.S. Rep. Paul Broun for the 10th Congressional District.

Retired U.S. intelligence officer Stephen K. Simpson, of Milledgeville, is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Paul Broun for his seat in Georgia's newly-drawn 10th Congressional District. As a result of redistricting, the winner of this race will take over from U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall as representative of in the U.S. House of Representatives in the new term.

Simpson was in Walton County this week as guest speaker of the Loganville Kiwanas Club. He let it be known that he is taking on Broun at the heart of his campaign, a promise to repeal Obamacare.

“It used to be ‘trust but verify,’ and now we have ‘Google and verify,’ Simpson said. “All you have to do is check and see (Broun’s) promise to repeal Obamacare is just a red herring.”

Simpson said to get any bill to pass it first has to be introduced in the House and then go before the Ways and Means or a joint tax committee of some sort.

“He would never get it passed, he said so himself when asked by someone in the audience,” Simpson said. “He said he had ‘zero’ chance of getting it passed. That’s just being a show horse.”

Simpson said with agriculture being the No. 1 industry in Georgia, he would do whatever he could to support it.

“My opponent has opposed agriculture because of earmarks,” he said. “I wouldn’t build a bridge to nowhere, but I would do everything I could to support what is a $70 billion a year industry in Georgia.”

Simpson said, as a military man who comes from a line of military men, he was concerned about plans to cut spending to the military. He did say, however, that there were some outdated military bases around the world where cuts could be made. His concerns were with resources for the fighting men and women and intelligence. Simpson spent the last six years of his military career at the Pentagon as an intelligence officer.

In summing up the race for the 10th Congressional District, Simpson said that people needed to decide whether they wanted a work horse or a show horse.

Simpson has been married to his wife, Susan, for 39 years and they have two sons; one works for GEICO and the other is in the military, currently serving in Afghanistan.

As well as Walton County, the new district includes Barrow and Oconee counties as well as chunks of Clarke and Gwinnett counties. In total, 25 counties are represented in Georgia's new 10th Congressional District. The winner in the July 31 primary will be the representative in the new term. No Democrat qualified to challenge for the district in the General Election in November.
