Resident Tells BOC Area in Unincorporated Gwinnett Feels Like 'Lost Colony'

McGill, a former District 3 commissioner, cites the recent homicide just outside Snellville city limits as an example of lax protection.

The recent homicide in unincorporated Gwinnett County in the Snellville area prompted a resident and former Gwinnett commissioner to carry his concerns to the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners on Tuesday.

Curtis McGill, who served as District 3 commissioner from 1988-92, told the commissioners Tuesday that his area feels like a "lost colony" and needs more police protection and zoning enforcement.

McGill said he lives on Temple Johnson Road, and that the March 30 slaying of Brent Francis happened "behind my house." Also, he said zoning regulators "just ignore" the area. This is in the unincorporated area of Gwinnett between he Loganville and Snellville city limits.

Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash, who is a former auditor with Gwinnett County, remarked that she remembered McGill from his days as commissioner. She and current District 3 commissioner Tommy Hunter stayed after Tuesday's meeting to talk with McGill.

"Motorcycles ... see how fast they can take the curves, like it has no guard rails." He added that the lake area in Lenora Church Park "has no grass."

"We're a part of Gwinnett County, too."

Hunter told McGill, "the cavalry is coming. ... But I need (citizens') help. I can't do it by myself."
