Hazmat Incident Closes Loganville Post Office - No Hazards Found

Law Enforcement and Emergency Personnel investigate, but find no hazards on scene.

Emergency crews were called to the Loganville Post Office on Friday afternoon for a report of a suspicious package that contained a white, powdery substance. A Hazardous Materials team from Gwinnett County Fire Department responded to the call, but was unable to locate any hazards on the scene despite a thorough search of the premises and a vehicle. The post office and surrounding area was closed to the public while police investigated.

Sources in the Loganville Police Department reported that officers were in contact with the Postmaster General, who told them that a powder is used on bulk mailings to keep the letters from sticking together and that this could possibly be the cause of the alarm.

After collecting her mail, a postal patron had returned to her car to open it when she saw a letter addressed to her from an unknown return address. When she opened the envelope, she reported a white dusting of powder flew from the letter. She then went back into the post office and alerted staff to what happened.
