Citing health issues, Loganville Mayor Ray Nunley will tender his resignation, according to city officials. A special called meeting will be held Wednesday to discuss how the city will proceed.

Nunley was diagnosed with lung cancer late last year and he has been undergoing treatment ever since. He announced during his State of the City address that he would not be seeking reelection in 2013, and Vice Mayor Dan Curry subsequently announced he would seek the post. The mayor and several council members threw their weight behind Curry's candidacy.

Nunley has tried to keep up his mayoral duties in the meantime, but has struggled in some instances. Curry has conducted meetings in they mayor's absence on occasion. The city put out an announcement Monday saying that in light of the mayor's health and his continued treatments, a special called meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday to discuss the mayor's letter of resignation.

Other topics on the agenda include:

  • Call for Special Election
  • Vice Mayor Role according to the Loganville City Charter

Many thanks to Mayor Nunley for his years of service to the city of Loganville- he should rest well, knowing that the influence and programs that he has built will drive the city into a great and prosperous future! Rest well, my friend, knowing that you leave your city in good hands, and that there are many people who can only be so lucky as to pick up the banner that you have held. Your city loves and thanks you, sir!

Ray was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He was the backbone of the Ivy Ridge Subdivision, and he will truly be missed. His sweet wife Joyce was always at his side and so supportive of him. I hope that Loganville, the town I grew up in, is aware of all the did for this area of Walton County. He will be mighty hard to replace. Evelyn Nelson, President, Ivy Ridge Homeowners Association
