Curry to Run for Mayor of Loganville in 2013

Loganville's Vice Mayor Dan Curry announced Friday he will be running to replace current Mayor Ray Nunley who will not be seeking reelection. Nunley was diagnosed with lung cancer last year.

Following a special called meeting on Feb. 22, 2013 to affirm a veto by Mayor Ray Nunley, Vice Mayor Dan Curry announced that he would be seeking the mayor's seat at the end of the year. Nunley announced last week during his State of the City address that he would not be seeking reelection in 2013. He has been battling cancer since being diagnosed at the end of last year.

"Mr Mayor, after prayer, and having spoken with my family, you, other council members and friends, I want to announce that I will run for mayor this fall," Curry said, going on to thank the mayor for the outstanding job he and the staff and fellow council members have done in steering the city through what has been some harsh economic times. "Due to your hard work, the city has grown, infrastructure has been enhanced, ISO ratings have dropped. There have been no cuts to any service, our emergency personnel have maintained a response time of two minutes - all this accomplished without a tax increase even though the tax base decreased."

Nunley threw his support behind Curry's candidacy.

"I would like to say that I fully support Dan Curry - he has the foresight and integrity and I fully endorse him," Nunley said.

This was echoed by Councilmen Mike Jones and Skip Baliles. Curry said he does not have to resign in order to run for the position until qualifying, which is in August. He will continue to serve as councilman until then. City Manager Bill Jones said that should the mayor's health make it that he unable to serve until the end of the year, as vice mayor Curry would be able to step into that role without having to resign.

The move does, however, open up Curry's seat for the remaining two years of his term.  This will put four council seats on the ballot in Loganville this November - the seats currently held by Councilmen Mark Kiddoo and Rey Martinez and Councilwoman Michelle Lynch as well as Curry's open seat. The terms for the seats currently held by Kiddoo, Martinez and Lynch are for the next four years while Curry's would just be for the remaining two years of his term.

Nunley had announced at the beginning of 2012 that he would be running for another term in 2013 when his term is up and when he first  he said nothing had changed. But that changed a couple of months into his treatment and Nunley announced on Feb. 14 that he would not be seeking reelection.

As well as echoing his support for Curry, Jones thanked the mayor for his service to the city and expressed his confidence in the direction that the city is headed.

"We've got a pretty good team put together and I encourage all my supporters and constituents to fully support (Dan Curry)," Jones said.

I can not think of a better person to be mayor than Dan Curry. His service to the people of Loganville and Walton County is a God send. We are truly blessed to have him serve our community.
