Walton County Elections Heat Up

Qualifiers for primary and nonpartisan posts at the state and county level begin at 9 a.m. May 23 and close at noon on May 25.

With several contested races already under way in Walton County, the election season is about to heat up. Qualifying for primary and nonpartisan posts at the state and county level begin at 9 a.m. May 23 and close at noon on May 25. Several people have already announced that they will be running, and others have indicated an interest.

Here's what you need to know if it is your intention to throw your hat into the ring.

The State Elections Division will conduct qualifying of candidates for nonpartisan state offices at its main location in Atlanta and at its South Georgia office in Tifton.

In partisan races, all General Assembly seats–in both the state House and Senate–are up for election. Since the last election, redistricting has changed the political landscape. The elections include general nonpartisan elections, party primaries and local elections. Nonpartisan state offices include offices of the Justice of the Supreme Court, Judge of Court of Appeals and Judge of Superior Court.

At the county level, the following are the positions in Walton County that will be on the ballot on July 31 with the corresponding qualifying fee. Qualifying will be at the Walton County Board of Elections in the Walton County Courthouse on Hammond Drive in Monroe.

  • Clerk of Superior Court - $2,034
  • Sheriff - $2,347.42
  • Tax Commissioner - $2,034
  • Surveyor - $25

  • Chief Magistrate - $2,034
  • Chairman of Board of Commissioners - $2,347.42
  • Walton County Commission Districts 2, 3 and 6 - $234.74
  • Board of Education Districts 3, 4, 6 and 7 - $36
