Councilman on Cutting School Resource Officers: 'It's Not Going to Happen'

Loganville councilmen Rey Martinez and Skip Baliles comment about the issue on Thursday's city council agenda.

A fairly hot topic is on the Loganville City Council agenda for Thursday's (Sept. 12) meeting: the cutting of school resource officers for Loganville schools.

Councilman Rey Martinez, who's head of the Public Safety Committee for the city, says the agenda item is just a renewal contract, though, and he doesn't anticipate any cuts.

As long as he's on the council, "it's not going to happen here," Martinez told Loganville Patch.

Aside from being on the committee, Martinez feels strongly about the issue because he has two children in Loganville schools.

Councilman Skip Baliles also commented on Patch about the cuts.

"I believe it would be fair to say that the Mayor nor any Council members want to see this program end and I suspect the contract for the coming year will be approved at this meeting," he wrote.

Patch blogger Tammy Osier also wrote a blogpost concerning the issue.

Patch will have more on the issue and the outcome of the agenda item after the city council meeting. For the full agenda, click here.
