Briscoe Field in Gwinnett May Take Hit By U.S. Sequester Budget Cuts

The control tower is among those on an FAA closure list.

Should the massive U.S. sequester budget cuts become reality, Briscoe Field in Gwinnett could be affected.

The control tower at the county-owned Lawrenceville facility is among more than 100 federal air traffic control operations that could be affected by the looming cuts, according to a Gwinnett spokesperson.

The control tower at Briscoe Field is operated by the Federal Aviation Administration. And FAA Director Ray LaHood informed Gwinnett Authorities Friday that the tower could be closed, county spokesperson Joe Sorenson said Monday.

However, Briscoe Field would remain open and operating even if the tower were closed, Sorenson said. And revenue derived from the airport likely would remain unchanged.

Sorenson noted that the county derives most of its airport revenue from leases, and that Briscoe Field is largely a break-even operation.

Sorenson also noted that most small airports like Briscoe do not have control towers. The towers make for safer operations, such as when pilots are crossing runways.

At Briscoe, the tower is closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily under normal operations, though some commercial charter jets land at that time.

The potential shutdown of Briscoe's control tower could send some pilots to nearby airports, such as DeKalb Peachtree Airport in Atlanta. Officials with that airport could not be reached for comment.

Please stop with the sky is falling crap! The sequester cuts NOTHING, obviously anyone reporting these such stories are not knowledgeable. This $85 Billion is nothing more than slowing the FUTURE increases of government spending. This Government is still growing much more than Y2012 even with the slowing of these increases. Our government will still have a deficit of $1 Trillion. This Administration has added $6 Trillion to the debt in the past 4 years, $85 Billion is just a dab. This will do nothing to hurt, but I suspect the President will push to make any cuts hurt the most. This government spends hundreds of millions on swanky conferences, lets cut the fat of government and do away with conferences in Hawaii and Vegas. Let's quit scaring the Low Information Citizens and get our fiscal health under control before something really scary happens like collapse of this Country.
