2011 Election Shaping Up In Loganville

Four candidates for three seats up for re-election and two Sunday alcohol-related issues already likely to be on the ballot in November.

Qualifying for city elections is set for the end of the month and it already looks like there’s an election shaping up in in 2011.

With the two issues related to alcohol - Sunday retail sales and Sunday serving of liquor by the drink - on the ballot, an election of sorts was already guaranteed for Loganville residents. It now also looks like there will be an election to select city council seats as well with at least four candidates looking to qualify for the three seats up in November – the three councilmen who already hold the posts and one newcomer.

Councilman Wendell Geiger said earlier in the year he would be running again, Councilman Dan Curry officially announced last week his name would be on the ballot and Councilman Jerry Price said Tuesday he would likely run again too.

“I hadn’t really given it much thought yet, but it is coming up at the end of the month isn't it," Price said, adding he would probably run again.

The fourth potential candidate is Loganville resident Lee (Skip) Baliles. He has been attending meetings all year and has handed out cards announcing his intention to run. Baliles confirmed Tuesday he would be throwing his hat into the ring.

The three candidates elected in November will be the first to serve the full four-year terms now instituted for Loganville city council posts. Qualifying is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 29 – 31 at Loganville City Hall, 4385 Pecan St. The cost to qualify is $180. Forms will be available at City Hall for interested candidates to pick from Aug. 29.
