Woman Injured in Arby's Parking Lot by Own Vehicle

A woman lost control of her vehicle Friday and was thrown out, sustaining injuries that required emergency transport to the hospital.

A woman was injured in the Arby’s parking lot on Highway 78 in Loganville Friday night when she was thrown from her vehicle and run over by the front wheels. The victim was taken to the hospital by a Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services Rescue unit with possible compound fractures of the legs. According to Detective David Hunt of the Loganville Police Department, the woman, who was parked in a handicap parking spot, was backing up her van when the gas pedal stuck and she was thrown from the vehicle.

"Preliminary investigations indicate the victim left the car in reverse as she exited the car, Realizing her mistake, she tried to jump back in to stop it," Hunt said. “It appears she hit the accelerator instead and as the car sped up, it threw her out and then ran over her. She was transported by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center with what seemed to be pretty severe injuries to her leg.”

Dillon Bell, 18, of Walnut Grove, was on scene with his friends when the accident occurred.

“We were sitting in the truck when we heard tires squealing," Bell said. "The car swung around, and the woman was thrown out the door. It ran over her legs and slammed into the building.”

Another bystander, Zach Smith, an 18-year old from Walnut Grove, used his cell phone to call 911.

“She was still conscious when we ran over there,” he said. “She was bleeding from the head, and both legs were covered in blood.”

Jamie McIntyre, 18, of Loganville, pulled into the parking lot right after the incident happened and saw his friends running over to the vehicle.

“At first, I thought it was one of my friends that had gotten hurt, so I called 911,” he said.

Another teen, Kelsey Wilson from Walnut Grove, tried to open the door of the vehicle, which was still running.

“I tried to turn it off, but all the doors were locked. The police had to break out the window to shut the van down,” Wilson said.

Loganville Fire Department’s Engine 18 and Truck 15 were on scene, as well as Gwinnett County Fire Engine 28.
