Walton Fire Rescue event set to "Crush Cancer"
Local Firefighters are once again getting fired up about fighting cancer.
It's not every day you get to smash a car with a sledgehammer. But This Saturday, you can do just that, grab a burger or hot dog, and feel good about it.
Saturday, March 31st, will host the first annual "Turn the Heat Up on Cancer" event at the Parking Lot in . The event will run from 10AM until 5PM, and will feature a multitude of ways to help raise funds for Relay For Life.
According to WCFR Battalion Chief Craig League, this is the first year that the Department has ever had a team fro the Relay for Life event. Firefighters and their families will participate in the walk this year. He said that they wanted to find a unique and fun way to involve the community and raise funds for their team.

"Our big fundraiser is our Crush Cancer Car Bash & Cookout," said League. "We have a Hot Pink Honda Prelude, with the ugly word Cancer painted on the side. For the low price of $1.00 you can have 3 whacks with a sledgehammer, at our ugly pink car. Blow off some of that pent up aggression, relieve some of that stress, and help us 'Crush' cancer."
Food will also be available. Burgers and hot dogs, cooked by the firefighters (Chief League is well known for his culinary skills) will also be on sale for $5. All proceeds from both the cookout and the car crush will go directly to the relay for life donation. Fire Trucks will be on site for viewing, always a hit with the kids.

This is the third time recently that local firefighters have worked to raise funds for cancer research, but the first that directly involves the community. In October, WCFR "Pinked Out" for breast cancer awareness by purchasing pink T-shirts to wear while on duty and for their families. Earlier this month, Loganville and WCFR firefighters raised funds for children's cancer research by collecting pledges in return for shaving their heads for the annual St. Baldwicks event in Jefferson. All three efforts are planned to become annual events.
