Walton County Sheriff's Office Lose One of Their Own

Detective James "Jim" Mayes, of the Walton County Sheriff's Office, died unexpectedly on Tuesday. He will be buried in Loganville on Friday.

Detective Chris Cannon of the Walton County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Detective James "Jim" Mayes, 67, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Cannon said it was with great regret that he had to break the sad news to his department yesterday.

"He was a great guy, a good dude, he will be missed," Cannon said. "He was just an awesome guy - a solid humanitarian who loved people - very much a people person. It is a major loss to our unit."

Cannon said Funeral arrangements have been announced. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 Thursday. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. at Loganville First Baptist Church of Loganville. Mayes, who was from Loganville, will be interred at Corinth Memorial Gardens on Highway 81.

Mayes leaves behind a wife, three grown children and grandchildren.
