Three Local Gwinnett Schools Earn State Recognition

The schools were among the 33 schools in Gwinnett recognized as 2012 Title 1 Distinguished Schools.

Three local schools were among the 33 Gwinnett County schools that earned the state’s 2012 Title 1 Distinguished School recognition. In total, 824 schools in Georgia received this honor.

"These schools are showing that high expectations, coupled with effective educators in the building, produce outstanding student achievement," state Superintendent of Schools John Barge said in a press release.

A Title I school earns the title of “Distinguished School” for making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) for three or more consecutive years. Title I schools receive federal funds to better serve their students, which include a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch.

In recognizing these schools for their efforts, Steve Flynt, Gwinnett’s associate superintendent for school leadership and operational support, said the district was pleased that the state DOE was recognizing a large number of Gwinnett schools.

"Our teachers and administrators work very hard every day to make sure students are meeting the rising expectations. We are proud of their academic achievement despite the challenges,” Flynt said in the release.
