UPDATE: One Traffic Fatality Reported in Walton County Over New Year's Weekend

UPDATE: A total of 12 fatalities were reported statewide over the New Year's weekend by the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

UPDATE: The Georgia State Patrol has amended the total of fatalities to 12 and removed the one reported in Walton County. According to the Walton County Sheriff's Office, the death reported on Sunday was not a traffic fatality. It was a suicide.

During the 78-hour travel weekend that began on Friday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. through Monday, Jan. 2 at midnight, there were 13 fatalities statewide over the New Year's holiday weekend, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The fatalities over the weekend included one from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) in Cartersville, three from Atlanta Police, one from GSP Atlanta, one from DeKalb Police, one from Macon Police, one from GSP Villa Rica, one from GSP Thomasville, one from GSP Perry, one from Valdosta Police, one from GSP Hinesville and one from

However, there appears to be some confusion about the one reported by WCSO. According to GSP, there was an incident Saturday on Clay Drive at Thompson Road in Walton County that was worked by the GSP, but it was not included in the count.

"When the trooper arrived, there was a subject deceased but it was later determined he died from a medical condition and had no injuries from the crash," a GSP spokesman reported. "We did not count this as a traffic death and removed it from the holiday count later that day. The info that came from our Radio Room was that Walton County worked a traffic fatality Sunday."

However, Chief Deputy Bruce Wright of the WCSO said the only incident in Walton County that he is aware of is one worked by the GSP on Saturday. In a separate incident, a  was killed in a fatal car wreck in Atlanta on New Year's eve.

There were no traffic fatalities reported in Gwinnett County over the weekend. Last year during the New Year's holiday period, the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) reported 320 crashes, 270 injuries and seven fatalities. Statewide in 2010, with all agencies reporting, there were 12 fatalities, 1,456 crashes and 594 injuries reported.
