Man Shot by Loganville Woman to Be Arraigned in a Walton County Courthouse on Tuesday

Paul Slater has been held in the Walton County Detention Center, without bond, since his release from the hospital on Feb. 10, 2013.

Alcovy Circuit Court District Attorney Layla Zon confirmed that who was shot by a Loganville mother on Jan. 4 when he broke into her home, will be arraigned in court this morning. He will appear in front of Superior Court Judge Ken Wynne. Slater is facing charges of possession of tools for commission of a crime and burglary in first degree.

Slater has been held without bond in the Walton County Detention Center without bond since his release from Gwinnett County Medical Center on Feb. 10, 2013. He had been recovering in Gwinnett Medical Center after being shot by Melinda Herman when he confronted her hiding in a closet with her 9-year-old twins.

According to the police report, Slater had knocked on the door and then rang the doorbell. Herman reportedly contacted her husband, who told her not to answer the door as he wasn’t expecting anyone. When she saw Slater retrieve a crowbar from the car, she grabbed her children, her .38 revolver, and hid in an attic closet. Slater broke into the house and subsequently located her in the closet. At that time she opened fire on him, hitting him with five of the six rounds in the gun. Her husband had already called 911 and by the time police arrived, the mother had retreated to a neighbor with the children, Slater had tried to escape in his car, but had subsequently crashed in a wooded area in the neighborhood.
