Loganville Motorcylist Arrested After Police Chase Reaching 143 mph

A Loganville man was arrested Friday night after leading a Lawrenceville police officer on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of up to 143 mph on SR 316

Jose Andres Mezu, 28, of 71 Wilkes Drive, Loganville, was arrested and now faces a slew of charges after running from police on Friday night.

The chase started after Mezu was initially clocked at about 8:17 p.m. riding his motorcycle on Highway 124 at 72 mph. The speed limit is 45 mph. When he was finally caught, Mezu had run up several more speeding charges, including up to 129 mph on Highway 124, 98, 109 and 114 mph on Sugarloaf Parkway and 143 mph on SR 316.

Police report that Mezu weaved in and out of traffic at these high rates of speed, avoided road blocks by other officers, jumped concrete gores and ran red lights in his efforts to avoid police. The chase continued on several roadways including I-85 and SR 120 before returning to Sugarloaf Parkway at speeds of 114 mph through heavier traffic.

Mezu was eventually arrested when he ran into the rear of another vehicle near Lakes Parkway, dropping the bike. An officer drew his gun and removed a gun from Mezu’s hip before taking him into custody. Mezu faces several speeding charges as well as fleeing or attempting to elude, flashing blue lights, crossing a double highway, gore, bar, shield, emergency lane, failure to obey signs or control devices, following too closely, improper/erratic lane change, motorcycle can’t pass in same lane, motorcycle rides between lanes, reckless driving, running red light and a taillight infringement. Police report that the taillight was turned off, possibly in an effort to avoid detection.

Mezu was released the following night after posting a $9,596 security bond.

I guess it's amazing no one was killed. Chasing someone at 143 mph seems a little dangerous for all involved.

Wow. I notice 27 total charges (all driving related) but nothing about being charged with carrying a concealed weapon?? Something doesn't pass the smell test here. All the driving related charges plus evading police totaled $9,600 bail. This guy obviously did not want to be caught. Will be interesting to see if he jumps bail and takes off.

Here is a link to the charges by the way. Just copy and paste the link below into your browser. http://georgia.arrests.org/Arrests/Jose_Mezu_7838178/

Ric, can you explain that flashing blue lights charge? If not, I will check with police.

I could only guess that it is based on, the guy on the motorcycle being fully capable of seeing 'flashing blue lights' in his mirror and still chose to continue running. So in other words, he could not use the excuse of, "sorry but I couldn't hear the +130dB siren blasting up my butt."

Yep, I'm thinking it should read "ignoring flashing blue lights"

Flashing blue lights refers to the blue LED cosmetic lights that were on the motorcycle and are not allowed to be on while the vehicle is on public streets

obviously the gun was registered and due to the open carry law his motorcycle is and extension of his property and therefore it is not illegal to carry while riding. Also he has a concealed weapons permit

You are correct about this, our great police force is so concerned with writing a speeding ticket they dont care about the safety of everyday citizens during the chase. If you havent noticed the police down here are cowboys that still want to play "cowboys and indians", a motorcycle doing 143 is a danger mainly to himself, a police car speeding fast enough to keep up with a motorcyle...now thats 5 tons of danger for anyone around!
