Gwinnett Fire To Offer First Annual F.L.A.M.E. Camp

The camp, to be held in conjunction with Gwinnett County Public Schools, will give students the opportunity to see what training goes into being a firefighter, paramedics or emergency medical technician.

In conjunction with Gwinnett County Public Schools, the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services will be holding its first annual F.L.A.M.E. Camp for students from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the GCFES training facility in Dacula.

F.L.A.M.E. (Firefighter Lunch And Mentoring Experience) is a one-on-one mentoring program where firefighters provide positive interaction with students considered “at-risk” for negative behavior indicators. Firefighters provide a positive adult interaction, similar to an older brother or sister, and help students develop essential values like self-esteem, teamwork and goal development. The student benefits by improving school performance and gains a meaningful friendship with a positive source of help and encouragement. The actual F.L.A.M.E. program meetings are held monthly during school hours at schools across the county.

The camp is designed to bring together students, staff and firefighters in an effort to allow students to see the school that emergency personnel have to attend in order to become firefighters, paramedics or emergency medical technicians. Activities will include practical drills and evolutions for the students to experience what it is like to be a firefighter or paramedic.
