George Walton Football Player Remains Critical

Jon Ross (JR) Snell remains in a critical condition at Egleston Children's Hospital after collapsing at football practice at George Walton Academy Monday.

Jon Ross (JR) Snell, a 6th-grader from George Walton Academy who collapsed during football practice Monday, remains in a critical condition at Egleston Children's Hospital, according to several reports in the media and from friends of the family. The teen is the son of Van and Nan Snell of Loganville.

The Monroe Fire Department and medical crews responded to the school at about 3:51 p.m. Monday afternoon, according to a press release from public information officer Lt. Bill Owens.

"Fire and Medical crews were directed to the football field  where the patient, who was a student, was unconscious and unresponsive," Owens said. "According to reports by George Walton Facility, the student was at football practice when he told one of the coaches he wasn't feeling well. The patient then lost consciousness."

Owens said that due to the nature of the incident, the patient was life flighted to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta. A friend of the family reported on Facebook that the teen underwent surgery overnight and again early this morning. Friends ask that the Snell family be kept in their prayers, especially during the next 48 hours which are said to be critical.
