UPDATE: Child Killed, another missing in Lanier Boating Collision

UPDATE: Authorities report arrest made in boating accident. Driver charged with boating under the influence and hit and run.

UPDATE:Β A spokesman with the Department of Natural Resources told the Gwinnett Daily Post that a boater has been taken into custody and charged with boating under the influence and hit and run.Β The Atlanta Journal is reporting his name is Paul Bennett and that he is from Cumming. The search continues for the 13-year-old. The AJC is also reporting that the 9-year-old and 13-year-old were brothers. The 13 people on the pontoon, including the fatality and the missing teen, were allegedly from Gwinnett County, but no names have yet been released.

Rick Lavender of the DNR told Cumming Patch that two boats collided about 10:30 p.m. Monday in the Shoal Creek area of Lake Lanier [near Lake Lanier Islands].

"The collision left a 9-year-old child dead and a 13-year-old missing," said Lavender. "Obviously we are continuing to investigate and at this point we are still searching for the 13-year-old."

This comes on the heels of an accident on Authorities continue to urge caution on the lake as the boating season picks up. Last year there were 11 fatalities on Georgia lakes and 109 boating accidents. There also were 168 boating under the influence arrests.
