Men in Tights — Will Meggings Catch on in America?

Men in tights is no longer just part of the title in a Robin Hood movie — it’s the new, hot fashion trend reported to be taking Manhattan by storm.

According to Times Live, the next hot fashion item for men is ... yes, tights. Do you have any in the Christmas stocking for the man in your life this year? Or, if you're a man, is it on your Christmas Wish List?

This fashion trend has been trying to make inroads for a couple of years, but up until now really hasn’t really caught on. However, once people like Justin Bieber, Russell Brand and Lenny Kravitz don their tights, or meggings as they’re being called, before heading out in public, things are sure to change. According to Times Live, meggings are doing well in Britain and are starting to really catch on in New York. Meggings are reportedly a natural progression from “skinny jeans” for men.

Do you think this trend will catch on, even here in the more conservative south, or is it just too European to make it in America?

I just can't see any men in my family in these - they're strictly blue jeans and T-shirt people.

Given our overweight population, it makes my eyes hurt just to imagine what meggings would look like on some of the guys who want to look cool and sylish. OH! My eyes! My eyes, as Phoebe (on "Friends") would say.

No. Especially if they plan on having children.

Chris Farley in tights dancing with Patrick Swayze as Chippendales on SNL comes to mind here. While funny, it’s not what I want to see outside of a Wal-Mart. Let’s leave this to the skinny musicians please.

I cannot say it better than you did, Mitch. This whole idea scares me. I already see more than I want to see.
Gail Lane December 14, 2012 at 03:36 PM
LOL! Mitch, that's exactly what I was thinking! I can't see the men in my circle of friends donning tights for ANY occasion - and many of them are musicians!

I think very few people can make skinny jeans look decent, so this "natural progression" is just scary. The only men I want to see in tights are ballet dancers.

The only way this will work is if you're Mick Jagger - oh wait he's been wearing tights for a while now -

No. Not a good look for guys, and very few women except leggings under skirts or with tunics can be cute and warm.

I think this idea will go the way of the murse--the man purse--for most guys. A few brave souls with muscular legs will wear them, no doubt. It's kind of what runners wear, but at least they are running and out of sight quickly.

@Liz,Rebecca,Deanna,Gail,Sharon,Vanzetta Why are all of the women at the PATCH obsessed with men in tight pants? An inquiring mind wants to know.
Sharon Swanepoel December 14, 2012 at 08:21 PM
Fair question George, :) but I don't know that I would call it obsession, amusement maybe. I did ballet in my youth so I was used to men in tights. I just don't know that the shopping aisle at Walmart is really the right place for them - that goes for many women in tights too for that matter!

@George, I wouldn't say I'm OBSESSED with men in tight pants! Although I will be Googling photos of Lenny Kravitz in meggings later... And in all fairness, we recently discussed women wearing yoga pants... And discovered many a Patch editor had a fondness for them as well. (I'm wearing some right now!)

My fiancee prefers me to wear nothing as often as possible while at home, and when out in public to keep it safe from prying eyes...

It would be visual pollution!

Men in tights sounds awkward. Frankly speaking I wont like to see the men in meggings.
Mark C December 22, 2012 at 04:35 PM
I don't see a problem with the idea, especially if worn under shorts...

It’s OK to encourage the liberal men out there in the world to wear them then? Monsieur Longshanks was right after all…
