Who Do You Think Qualifies as America's Best President?

On Presidents Day, let us know your favorite leader and why he is your choice.

Presidents Day honors Georgia Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays are in Feburary, along with the other presidents.

In honor of the day, let us know who you think was our best president. Is it someone in current times, or in your mind has history already given us someone tough to beat?

Of course, if you'd like to tell us who you think was the worst president, we'd welcome those comments as well.

Clinton was a good president...but a bad husband.
ToJo February 18, 2013 at 02:41 pm
9/11 definitely dealt W a rough hand of cards, it changed our country forever. Admittedly, it is easy to see the flaws in hind site but our military actions under him turned into an abject failure. If I had to choose a President to have a beer with, it would be W hands down, just a terrible President. I agree that Reagan knew how to get things accomplished in DC, the Great Communicator works. As far as Reaganomics is concerned, I could not disagree more. Trickle down has been a disaster. Since roughly 1980, the wealth of the top 2% has gone up over 400%, the wealth of all others has gone up 70%. This is not class warfare, it is a failure of trickle down. Businesses and investors are in the business of making money, not creating jobs or better paying jobs. I Understand this and agree in principle. That being said, we need a tax code and sensible regulations that incent (sp) level the playing field. We have become a country that is ruled not by the people or politicians but the ultra rich. $2 billion was spent on the 2012 election, this screams corruption. I am sorry, but Reagan made this insanity ok in the eyes of average American. Yes he was the great communicator.
Chris P February 18, 2013 at 02:42 pm
George Washington will always be number one given the unique position of him being the first President. That being said Ronald Reagan would be the best President in modern times. Barack Obama has captured the title hands down of the worst President in US history.
Mr. B February 18, 2013 at 02:48 pm
Harrison. He had the decency to die a month into his term.
Tammy Osier February 18, 2013 at 02:49 pm
Chris P. - agreed about Johnson. He was very opposed. I wish people would actually look at history as it happened rather than how it has been rewritten to support an agenda. For those who say dixie-crats and all that became republicans of today, look again at history. Those people stayed with the democrats and didn't move on with the republican party. I can provide names etc... Civil rights was a turing point. For those affected by it, a great gain, for those opposed to it, the media picked up on its power to make people believe their salvation came from a political party. How disastrous that has been, but many are waking up to the truth and getting stoned for it. But I have faith that the truth will prevail.
Tammy Osier February 18, 2013 at 02:51 pm
But yeah, George Washington definately. He fought alongside his people to win freedom. How long has it been since we've had a leader that has seen war?
David Brown February 18, 2013 at 04:35 pm
Folks, the question posed is "Who do you think qualifies as America's best President"? Please allow me to express my opinion without forcing your perspectives on this question down my throat. Thanks.
Chris P February 18, 2013 at 04:48 pm
I don't see anyone forcing their perspective down your throat. Could you please elaborate?
Ed Varn February 18, 2013 at 05:16 pm
Lincoln was the first President to decide the Constitution didn't matter if it didn't fit his needs.
Sadly, he wasn't the last one as well.
Brian Crawford February 18, 2013 at 05:31 pm
Lincoln preserved the union and ended slavery...hard to top that. Washington set our course. Teddy Roosevelt shaped the nation's economic destiny with his Square Deal and realized the importance of conserving our natural resources. FDR led us through our darkest times and devised the New Deal laying the foundations of the middle class. Johnson's Great Society programs brought millions out of poverty and established health care as a right for American seniors and the poor. Those would be my top five.
tank rollins February 18, 2013 at 05:58 pm
harry s truman..the only president with any real "spauldings"...reagan maybe a distant second...
RL February 18, 2013 at 07:13 pm
Teddy Roosevelt's shadow foreign policy butchered American Indians, Filipinos and Chinese. Later on killed millions in the Pacific campaign of WWII because of stealth promises to the Japanese we did not live up to. Well read man as yourself should know this.
George Wilson February 18, 2013 at 07:56 pm
I'm agreeing with Brian 100%.
Good Grief Y'all February 18, 2013 at 08:09 pm
History will treat Barack Obama with the respect he deserves. I think FDR, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and Bill Clinton all served their country well in modern times. Jimmy Carter's legacy was robbed by the Iranian hostage crisis and big oil. He has proven to be the best former President.
The worst would be George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon - in that order.
David Brown February 18, 2013 at 08:41 pm
Good Grief Y'all, you're a breath of fresh air. Thanks for your comment.
Good Grief Y'all February 18, 2013 at 10:07 pm
Why, thank you, David.
Tammy Osier February 18, 2013 at 10:14 pm
While Roosevelt created many good programs, the problem with government creating programs is summed up in something Reagan said:
"No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!" What that means to me is that if we put a time limit on a program, the government needs to have the integrity to stick to it. The only one worth keeping was the ones for the elderly. Look at welfare and tell me, is it better or worse for having been around so long? He continued..."We should measure welfare's success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added." At that point, it has failed. At least we could have reformed it. the problem with government is that it continues to take money from people even when the money is spent on a failing program. Seems we could have some way to withold taxes on certain things until government fixes it-then people would be happy to give. But government is drunk on power over other peoples money.
Brian Crawford February 18, 2013 at 10:24 pm
I think you're right on the money about Obama and Carter. Reagan and Bush as well. The conservative adulation of Reagan just doesn't stand up under scrutiny.
Tammy Osier February 19, 2013 at 12:20 am
...I mean, WITH other people's money lol
Good Grief Y'all February 19, 2013 at 01:01 am
Thanks, Brian. And, you're so right about Reagan. Yet, Democrats are accused of idolizing our current President.
Amy February 19, 2013 at 01:45 am
Love your choices GGY! I love FDR too.
Mr. B February 19, 2013 at 03:08 am
Today was a difficult day. It's the one year anniversary of my wife's passing. Although I know she is in a much better place, I still miss her. But luckily for me, I can read through the posts of several of our most liberal stooges and get a huge laugh. Thanks so much for cheering me up. You guys are a hoot.
CHERYL CLINE February 19, 2013 at 04:57 am
I believe that "Mt. Rushmore," which is part of the Black Hills, should be GIVEN back to the decendants of the the Lakota Indian Tribe. The Lakota were "removed and re-assigned" to other Indian land (known now to all as reservations), after white-european settlers found gold to be mined, in the Black Hills. The Black Hills area has been inhabited by various Indian Tribes since 7000 BC. On, 23 July,1980 (after the case of U.S. v. Sioux Nation of Indians, ended) The Supreme Court ruled that the Black Hills were ILLEGALLY TAKEN and that the remuneration of the Black Hills be set at its initial offering price of $106 million dollars. The Lakota REFUSED the money. Not a single Lakota tribal member has ever claimed or accepted, any of this money, which in 2010 amounted to over $757 million dollars. And to help erase the memory of this terrible injustice, I believe the U.S. Governmnet should clear away, all the U.S. presidential faces and any trace of them from the Black Hills Indian territory, if the Lakota desire it done.
Good Grief Y'all February 19, 2013 at 12:03 pm
Amy, :D
FDR served as POTUS for 12 years during the Great Depression and WWII - the 2nd worst period in US history, with the Civil War being the worst of times. Imagine that - Americans agreeing to 3 terms with the same person. At this point in time, it's had to believe we'll ever have another 2-term president from either party.
John Atkinson February 19, 2013 at 08:01 pm
I Like Ike! War Hero; A genuine likeable fellow. He was suited for the times.
Jeffrey Long February 20, 2013 at 12:37 am
George Washington is a walkaway on this one. These modern lightweigths can't hold a candle.
Roy McCreary February 21, 2013 at 07:54 pm
First, George Washington, then Ronald Reagan.
Worst president in American history - Barack Hussein Obama, then Jimbo Carter.
Roy McCreary February 21, 2013 at 08:00 pm
Liberals are stooges, regardless of whether they are President or not.
Marvin Mauldin February 21, 2013 at 08:32 pm
Nancy Reagan was my favorite, and is still living, so would qualify as the current best, which is how I read the question.
Chris N. February 22, 2013 at 04:34 pm
Ronald Reagan and George Washington. The absolute worst in the history of this great country is Barack Obama who is taking us down the path of socialism.

David, it's still there we are just in the process of working out the bug on uploading photos toRead More articles that we authored (ugh!). I just didn't want to promote it and have people try and upload photos unsuccessfully. Depending on how long it takes to address this issue, I may keep June open through part of July - I hope not. If you have any photos you want to add, email them to me and I will upload them for you in the meantime.

That is the strawberry fields. I have a picture of the strawberry fields between the welcome toRead More Loganville and welcome to Grayson signs that I will get up soon.

Yea, sorry David. We are still dealing with some "issues." It rejected Jason's blog, andRead More none of us, not even our top regional editor, is being given authority to release it. Poor Jason, I know he so hates being rejected! And we hate it happening to him. The people not being "bugged" by technical issues, however, are reporting that it is super easy to use.
TheSkalawag June 19, 2013 at 08:10 am
I wonder. Will Patch restore the reply button and add a responded to your comment notification?
Sharon Swanepoel (Editor) June 19, 2013 at 09:21 am
Please keep these comments coming. We are forwarding all these issues to our production team. TheRead More ones that are most pressing are more likely to be addressed first. Once we have the initial roll out completed and working well, the tweaking will begin.
Dave June 19, 2013 at 03:12 pm
I have it on good authority that the revolution will begin in October. Stay tuned.
TheSkalawag June 19, 2013 at 06:35 pm
I know I'm going to hate myself for this but.
TheSkalawag June 19, 2013 at 06:36 pm
Dave why will the revolution begin in October?
Sharon Swanepoel (Editor) June 18, 2013 at 03:05 pm
Tom, I will see if I can find the connection.

Good Grief Y'all June 19, 2013 at 09:49 am
I see your point Skalawag and I raise it. Maybe this would be a good CDC survey subject. ImagineRead More the backlash, though! I still think it's a dangerous topic as a class assignment. We probably already know the reasons for teen suicide. We do need better methods and awareness to identify those at risk.
Dave June 19, 2013 at 03:18 pm
Yeah, that's the ticket! Get the government involved to tell us what to think. The CDC is a greatRead More place to start.
TheSkalawag June 19, 2013 at 07:03 pm
GGY you're right on a number of counts. 1) I think the CDC is a good idea because they couldRead More coordinate the results of the survey nationwide. 2) We need better awareness and methods of the problems and how to deal with them. And 3) the government phobic response. Que Dave. I think it's more dangerous not to confront the subject among those at the highest risk and who are least able to deal with the problems because of their mental and emotional immaturity. The more insight we have into the causes for teens wanting to take their own lives the more aware we will be of the problems and the better able we would be to devise methods that help those most vulnerable.

My kids drink coffee every morning because they need something to accompany their cigarettes.
Tammy Osier June 14, 2013 at 01:12 pm
Tr - the perfect diet - the Mediterranean diet has a lot of fish in it. Olive oils etc... OurRead More American diet has a lot of animal fat in it and look at us as opposed to other nations! Fish oil is brain food. A multi is good, but we should ask our pediatricians about adding fish oil to our kids' diets. We should get our (good) fats through diet. Good fats help vitamins go where they are supposed to and do what they're supposed to do.

My grandma always drunk coffee all day and I started around 30 and I am no good without at least oneRead More cup a day but she always stated that we couldn't have any as kids because it will stunt our growth. I have always felt that there is something to many of those old sayings and did not let my son touch it.
Tammy Osier June 17, 2013 at 01:53 pm
DR, seems like an oxymoron doesn't it? I'd like to hear from someone who is actually from there toRead More find out their spin on why they even enter a contestant in the first place. It's my understanding that a woman that shows that much skin in public will be flogged or worse? Maybe democracy is taking ahold in some places, who knows?
Good Grief Y'all June 17, 2013 at 03:24 pm
