Several news outlets reported recently on a 300-pound Mesquite, Texas, 12-year-old football player who was banned from playing pee wee football because of his size. According to the Huffington Post, Mesquite Pee Wee Football Association rules have a weight limit of 135 pounds for seventh-graders. The child was reportedly humiliated and his mother incensed, but with the injuries incurred in football, is it safe for other smaller youth to go up against someone of his size? He is reported to be 6-foot-1.
While his size might be a benefit to him as a football player later, he needs to learn the necessary skills as well. If he can't play, how can he learn those skills?
Was the Mesquite Pee Wee Football Association correct in banning the 12-year-old or should he be allowed to play in the league?
