TSPLOST Failed, So What Happens Now?

The people spoke when it came to TSPLOST and the answer was a resounding no. Point taken, but what now? The traffic congestion is still there, but the money to solve it isn't.

When all the votes were tallied, taxpayers left little doubt how they felt about any more taxes — even if it was to relieve Georgia's major traffic problems. But saying "no" is one thing, deciding what to do about it going forward is another.

Patch columnist Jeff Allen gave his suggestions in his latest column ." However, solving Atlanta's traffic problems definitely requires someone to bring their A game to the table. The problem is in the current economy people are already financially strapped and asking them for more money, no matter what you call it, isn't going to work — at least right now.

So what are the options? In the absence of TSPLOST funding, how do you suggest your elected officials solve the transportation problems? What is your Plan B?

Plan B is as simple, in my mind, as doing the right thing.
1. I would gladly drop a dime to return driver's education to the high school curriculum of the public school system. Learning how to turn the key is not learning how to drive. 2. I favor firm, consistent law enforcement for those found guilty of being inattentive drivers. By this, I mean strict laws against texting, strict laws against hand held devices of any kind, and fines that put teeth into the laws. 3. A DUI related death should bring 1st degree murder charges. The driver knew they were drinking, and knew that impaired driving could lead to someone's death. Therefore, the decision to drive was premeditated. 4. The legislature should adopt and enforce 'slower traffic keep right' and 'no driving in the passing(leftmost, non HOV/HOT) lane. The problems on our highways have very logical solutions.

Having lived in the burbs of Wash. DC I know adding more lanes doesn't work-12 lanes in and 12 out into Washington. They finally built a train line and got buses to the trains. They under estimated the parking at the train depots-so plan for double the population. Hey - with GAS going up again, and the population getting older we have to get some bus services. Even if it's only up and down Hwy78 and 20 to basic business districts-Loganville, Snellville, Grayson. I just hope they don't go back to increasing the gas tax and tolls for every project that should already be on the long term maintenance plan.

David, it's still there we are just in the process of working out the bug on uploading photos toRead More articles that we authored (ugh!). I just didn't want to promote it and have people try and upload photos unsuccessfully. Depending on how long it takes to address this issue, I may keep June open through part of July - I hope not. If you have any photos you want to add, email them to me and I will upload them for you in the meantime.

Yea, sorry David. We are still dealing with some "issues." It rejected Jason's blog, andRead More none of us, not even our top regional editor, is being given authority to release it. Poor Jason, I know he so hates being rejected! And we hate it happening to him. The people not being "bugged" by technical issues, however, are reporting that it is super easy to use.

I wonder. Will Patch restore the reply button and add a responded to your comment notification?
Sharon Swanepoel (Editor) June 19, 2013 at 09:21 am
Please keep these comments coming. We are forwarding all these issues to our production team. TheRead More ones that are most pressing are more likely to be addressed first. Once we have the initial roll out completed and working well, the tweaking will begin.

I'm just reporting the news, Skal. I don't know the reasons although I could speculate. Just keepRead More your head down and don't answer the door.

"There's one in particular GGY." Skalawag, I doubt we're thinking of the same one.
Good Grief Y'all June 20, 2013 at 07:40 am
R+. there's only so much you can put on a Census questionnaire. The purpose of the Census, aRead More Constitutional mandate, is to count folks.

DR, seems like an oxymoron doesn't it? I'd like to hear from someone who is actually from there toRead More find out their spin on why they even enter a contestant in the first place. It's my understanding that a woman that shows that much skin in public will be flogged or worse? Maybe democracy is taking ahold in some places, who knows?
Good Grief Y'all June 17, 2013 at 03:24 pm
I was wrong. Guys are interested pageants. You would no doubt be happy if the contestants justRead More wore the face shawl with their bikinis.

Couple of thoughts - One, why hold it in a land where there is going to be this kind of protest?Read More Just move it and don't worry about it. Other, I find it interesting how the Muslims want us to be understanding and inclusive of their beliefs, but don't even think they'll allow anything they don't agree with. Just a tad bit hypocritical...
