Should Ann Coulter Apologize for Offensive Tweet?

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter tweeted an offensive term in reference to the president following the last debate. Should television and radio stations that carry her commentary demand she apologize?

Despite the backlash against Ann Coulter’s use of the word "retard" in a tweet in reference to President Barack Obama following the last debate, the conservative commentator refuses to apologize, either to the president or those with an intellectual disability.

In an article in Media Matters, it was reported that efforts have been in recent times to have the word retard declared “hate speech,” but Coulter has doubled down on her reasoning for using the term. She is reported to have said on the Alan Colmes Show "no one would refer to a Down syndrome child, someone with an actual medical handicap, by saying retard. Where do you think the words idiot, imbecile, cretin, moron, come from? These were all technical terms at one time. Retard has been used colloquially to just mean 'loser' for 30 years."

John Franklin Stephens, a global messenger for the Special Olympics who himself has Down syndrome, wrote a letter to Coulter asking why she assumed she could use the term and still continue appearing on TV.

“I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words, but recoiled from the backlash,” Stephens wrote, adding “Well Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.”

Fellow conservative commentator Michelle Malkin has been critical of Coulter's tweet, calling it "stupid and shallow."  In that case there were bipartisan calls for Longoria to step down from the campaign. That, however, did not happen.

Do you think shows such as Fox News, for which Coulter is a frequent commentator, should demand she apologize, both to the president and to the special needs community, for her tweet?

I agree Gail. Wrongs never equal right. I never stated what Ann Coulter said was okay by me. It's disgusting. I have friends with a retarded child and while it's heart breaking to see this innocent child with such a horrific disability, it's amazing to watch his parents care so much for his every need. I remember using the term myself as a kid not understanding how awful it is.
The question here is in fact, should she apologize and I say emphatically, no. It wouldn't change the opinion about her that we both share. If she did apologize, it would most likely just be to appease and that proves nothing.
Rex Smithers October 26, 2012 at 08:36 pm
LOOK! It's gail with a P beside her picture. Gail has posted 1/5 of the comments in this section and all appear to show anger.
Hell No AC should not apologize. The left wing nut bags never apologize and you don't get you Patch in a wad over their comments. Get Over It!
Gail Moore October 26, 2012 at 08:48 pm
"Patch in a wad"??? I LOVE IT!
So Rex is a "no." And Gail is a "yes". Kumbaya and all that!
Marley October 26, 2012 at 09:07 pm
What do you bet that the number of yes and no votes reflect the current polarization of this country? Half will say yes and half no. Sad...
Rebecca McCarthy (Editor) October 26, 2012 at 09:18 pm
Perhaps she shouldn't apologize, because doing so would get her just more coverage by the TV people, who delight in treating comments by such ridiculous blowhards as something delivered in tablet form from Mt. Sinai. The less one sees and hears of her--what's her name again?--the better. We know what she is, does and says.
Tammy Osier October 26, 2012 at 09:20 pm
Yeah. It was disrespectful, but the President of the United States of America using the word bullshi**er to describe his opponent? Touche.
Sandy October 26, 2012 at 09:36 pm
No. Fox News, for which Coulter is a frequent commentator, should not demand she apologize. If Ann Coulter is sorry for what she said, she should apologize. If Fox News doesn't like what Ann Coulter says, they should no longer have her on. Bob Beckel has used the F word several times on live air waves. He always apologizes and then does it again later.
John B October 26, 2012 at 10:12 pm
BTW...I don't think she's capable of apologizing even if she should apologize. Most conservatives view her as representative of their party. Honestly, I think she's a man dressed in drag........a little scary.
Steve R. October 26, 2012 at 10:15 pm
So what are you saying Marley? Would you feel it not "Sad" if we all or the majority of us agreed that Fox News should not demand Ann Coulter apologize?
Marley October 26, 2012 at 10:44 pm
I feel it is sad that many in this country feel that protected speech means that they don't need to apologize if they said something "stupidly." But hey, what can I say.
Steve R. October 26, 2012 at 11:31 pm
Marley, you said "What do you bet that the number of yes and no votes reflect the current polarization of this country? Half will say yes and half no. Sad..."
You answered my question with something completely different than your statement. Well... you're also the one that said "Obama respects this nation just as much if not more than any of the last Presidents". Good Grief. Never mind!
Tammy Osier October 27, 2012 at 12:20 am
These people are pundits - not elected officials. Such a difference. I find it so frustrating though that when it's a republican, suddenly liberals get amnesia. I would give credence to what they say if they would apply the same standard to their pundits. Instead they make excuses.
Gail Moore October 27, 2012 at 12:27 am
Tammy, even pundits and entertainers should know there is a limit to what is acceptable. You are very much saying that since the "other" team is playing foul, then it's o.k. to do so? You're going to stand behind Ann Coulter as if this were an o.k. statement because "liberals get amnesia"? Should SOMEBODY take the high road every now and again?
Deb Couey October 27, 2012 at 04:52 am
If Malkin called Coulter's tweet "stupid and shallow" then should all the stupid and shallow people be offended?
David Brown October 27, 2012 at 11:57 am
As a Bible-believing Christian and a patriotic American, I was appalled by Ms. Coulter's comment. You do not publicly disrespect the President of this country, no matter how much you disagree with him. Ms. Coulter should be thankful that God is more merciful than I am. If I were God, I might have struck Ms. Coulter with a temporary case of aphasia for her awful comment. God says that we should respect, honor and pray for President Obama, even if we disagree with him (Romans 13: 1-2; 1 Timothy 2:1-3; Titus 3:1-2; and 1 Peter 2:13-17). Keep in mind that Nero was the head of the government when much of those Bible passages were written. Nero was infinitely worse than President Obama. Nero was known for, among other things, having captured Christians burned in his garden at night for a source of light.
John B October 27, 2012 at 12:03 pm
buahahaha.....as a bible believing Christian you sure are filled with hate.....Laughable for someone who in almost every post insuinuates race is the driver for anyone who disagrees with Obama. Hypocrite much?
Steve R. October 27, 2012 at 12:29 pm
Tammy, it's always a double standard. Ann Coulter doesn't reach anywhere near the numbers of people as, Bill Maher, Roseanne Barr and David Letterman. These people complaining about Ann Coulter are hypocrites. She has the same right to call Obama names as any other American. He's a liar and a disgrace to the office.
Where were the crybabies when Harry Reid said the war in Iraq was lost? This while we had our friends and our family members being shot at? Where was the outrage when John Kerry called our Military terrorists and Bush a liar while we had troops in harm's way. Where were the hurt feelings when the Democrats were calling the highly respected, decorated David Petraeus "General Betrayus"? All this BS talk after the Democrats themselves voted to send troops into harm’s way. We heard crickets. NOTHING! Some of you people need to get your priorities straight. Ann Coulter is a big mouth moron. A nobody!
North Georgia Weather October 27, 2012 at 12:34 pm
I think what's sad is that "reporters" and editors don't understand how to report anymore. Whatever happened to "unbiased" reporting? It's not reporting if you interject your own personal beliefs into it.
And BTW... I know a very good mom that has an autistic child that uses the word retard... Webster: slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress
North Georgia Weather October 27, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Gail, you should know by now that political thoughts and actions NEVER take the high road.

This is American with freedom of speech why should she apologize for what ? That's her right to express herself-this is not a bad cuss words or nothing like that-People need to get concern about child rape and killer, murders, robbers, , rapers and all the crime this United States is going throught. sex traffic child prom ,drugs killing old people let get real and cut the out this nonsense!!
Evelyn Smith October 27, 2012 at 10:21 pm
Who cares what she saids, she is irrelevant to me. I am sure Presiident Obama llaugh everytime she opens her mouth! I think she should look in the mirror and say the word retard. Calling people inappropriate names shows lack of judgement, low self-esteem, and little intelligence.

Steve, all due respect... you are an ass.. She has no place speaking in such a way, even though the president may very well be a total jackass, use a different word. Equating moron or idiot with a hateful use of the word "retard" is degrading and offensive and the disabled population does not deserve such negativity. THe letter from Stephens was completely on the mark. It should be worn as a badge of honor... It has nothing to do with the president... Ann Coulter is a bit$% on wheels and is smart enough to know better.
nate November 1, 2012 at 04:19 pm
Steve, you are picking the wrong issue... THe issue is the word she chose... Coulter is a brilliant woman, albeit a total bi*#$ but brilliant nonetheless, she could have used any other term in her extensive vocabulary, but she chose to pick on the weak and virtually defenseless, and therefore she should apologize... Most agree with you that the pres is a moron, but that doesn't mean she should pick on a population that knows nothing better than to love unconditionally. So stop misplacing your frustration, and stick to the issue at hand.
Steve R. November 1, 2012 at 04:37 pm
I don't care for the use of the word in slander and I don't use the term but apparently, the term is open for personal interpretation.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/retard?s=t 1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede. 2. to be delayed. 3. a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance, as in a machine. 4. Slang: Disparaging . a. a mentally retarded person. b. a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way: a hopeless social retard. 5. Automotive, Machinery . an adjustment made in the setting of the distributor of an internal-combustion engine so that the spark for ignition in each cylinder is generated later in the cycle. World English Dictionary 3. offensive ( US ) a foolish person I personally think definition 4-b explains Obama. Certainly Obtuse. Under the World English Dictionary definition I also feel Obama is foolish. I also feel the electorate is foolish for voting for such a man. That's what OBAMA MONEY do to people.

Good Grief Y'all November 3, 2012 at 09:01 pm
I agree with George. Free speech should be protected, except in the case of causing a riot or yelling "fire" in a crowd. If Dan Coulter had called Romney retard, except for the free speech folks, everyone on this thread would have written just the opposite.

I agree with Raven Nichols. I think that it is more important to find out the reasons WHY kids areRead More contemplating and committing suicide. GGY is right. It is a dark subject and off putting but the fact that kids are taking their own lives at such a young and tender age is an even darker subject that can't wait to be addressed until they are in college they may not make it that far. I disagree with Tammy in that I don't think girls have don't have a more drama in High School than boys. It's just drama over different things. And I don't think that the teacher was looking for objectivity but insight into the reasons for teen suicides. After all who would have a better understanding of the why suicides occur in teens than other teens. I applaud the teacher.
