Is It OK to Wear Yoga Pants Outside the Studio?

With the Black Friday run on yoga pants from Victoria Secret, can we expect to see more of them on the streets after Christmas?

The Black Friday run on yoga pants from Victoria Secret begs the question, are that many people looking to take up yoga in the new year? Or are the fashion police going to be looking for additional recruits as all those people in yoga pants hit the streets?

Fashion experts have been debating this issue since yoga pants first became a clothing item. Are they just for yoga or is it OK to wear them on the streets, in stores and restaurants or even, gasp ... in the office?

According to Jocelyn Greenky Herz, a senior vice president of SoHo-based Colin Cowie Lifestyle, “Yes.” In a New York Times article Herz said, "If your entire outfit looks chic, there’s no reason not to."

But not everybody shares this opinion. The issue has even raised some controversy with some school dress codes ruling out yoga pants as acceptable school dress.

What do you think? Are yoga pants outside the studio a no-no or an acceptable fashion statement? Do you see it as a sign of fashion confidence or a sign of just plain laziness?

Day by day Yoga is getting popularity in many countries and many fashion industries are producing fashionable yoga outfits which are not only usable for practicing yoga but also for going outside. As a Yoga instructor I love to wear yoga pant while going out with my friends.

Ha ha! I'm wearing yoga pants right now! They're comfortable! And I'm going to the gym later this morning anyway.
Rebecca McCarthy (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 02:30 pm
Yoga pants are the only pants my zipper-phobic daughters will wear to school.
Crystal Huskey (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 02:45 pm
Yoga pants make me feel like if I have the urge to go to the gym, I can do so at any moment...
Sharon Swanepoel (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 02:47 pm
And would do, if only there was enough time. Oh well, maybe I'll try again tomorrow. What yoga pants can I find to wear tomorrow, just in case. :)

Note: I am still sitting here in my yoga pants 2 and a half hours later... On my couch!
Side note: Yoga pants appears to be the preferred uniform of Patch editors!

Whatever happened to activity specific clothing ? I remember when you only wore gym clothes in gym or pajamas to bed. Nowdays people are wearing anything anywhere. I guess I'll be heading to Publix in my speedo later.
Mr. B November 26, 2012 at 05:59 pm
I'll be shopping at Kroger. Although I don't seem to have an appetite anymore.
Sharon Swanepoel (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 05:59 pm
Let us know if we need to come and bail you out David. A shopper in Publix in a speedo could be something that generates one of those 911 calls on a "person acting in a suspicious manner."
Sharon Swanepoel (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 06:08 pm
Only for "office" wear Vanzetta.

I say "what ever twirls your beanie, baby!" After all, I know I have seen far worse in Walmart...snicker,snicker!
Deanna Allen (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 06:30 pm
If it was acceptable to wear pajama pants everywhere, that's what I'd do. But I've found Walmart is really the only place I can do that. Just yesterday I bought some sweatpants that I could wear in public. I'll have to try that out.
Aren't yoga pants fairly tight fitting? I'm thinking that's a no-no in public for me.
North Georgia Weather November 26, 2012 at 07:10 pm
Depends on how you look! If you look like the pictures above, absolutely!
David Binder November 26, 2012 at 09:36 pm
Yeah, I WAS going to do it at Walmart but figured I'd just blend in with all of the other strange creatures. LOL !
Crystal Huskey (Editor) November 26, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Too funny, and yet so right.

If I had the body of a healthy 20-something, then yes, by all means, wear yoga pants. I took a long look at myself in the mirror. I don't wear yoga pants to yoga class. It was frightening!
Tammy Osier November 27, 2012 at 12:23 am
So, David, we might see you on the website "People of Walmart" then? lol
David Binder November 27, 2012 at 12:25 am
LOL No. People Of Publix !
Ann November 27, 2012 at 02:12 am
Yes it's okay to wear them whenever you want. It's funny to me how the majority of men seem to have a problem with them (oh, of course if you look sexy in them then they say it's okay) but most of the women think they are fine. Conclusion - wear what you want, not what makes someone else happy.

I don't know, I like them. I'm all for women wearing Yoga pants.
However, I would say let's use common sense in wearing them. If you can get away with them, fine. If you look like 10 pounds of Jello squeezed into a 5 pound sack, then maybe best to leave them at home. Just sayin....
Alaxander Franks November 27, 2012 at 09:10 pm
Please wear them!!! Almost every woman in Barrow County could use some Lycra on their thighs. Yal are almost all a bunch of fat broads! So do whatever you can. and to be fair so are most of them men Squeal Piggies!!! Squeal!!!
Alaxander Franks November 27, 2012 at 09:11 pm
I would pay $20.00 too see if your willing to put your money where your mouth is!

David, it's still there we are just in the process of working out the bug on uploading photos toRead More articles that we authored (ugh!). I just didn't want to promote it and have people try and upload photos unsuccessfully. Depending on how long it takes to address this issue, I may keep June open through part of July - I hope not. If you have any photos you want to add, email them to me and I will upload them for you in the meantime.

Yea, sorry David. We are still dealing with some "issues." It rejected Jason's blog, andRead More none of us, not even our top regional editor, is being given authority to release it. Poor Jason, I know he so hates being rejected! And we hate it happening to him. The people not being "bugged" by technical issues, however, are reporting that it is super easy to use.

I wonder. Will Patch restore the reply button and add a responded to your comment notification?

Please keep these comments coming. We are forwarding all these issues to our production team. TheRead More ones that are most pressing are more likely to be addressed first. Once we have the initial roll out completed and working well, the tweaking will begin.

Dave why will the revolution begin in October?

Yeah, that's the ticket! Get the government involved to tell us what to think. The CDC is a greatRead More place to start.
TheSkalawag June 19, 2013 at 07:03 pm
GGY you're right on a number of counts. 1) I think the CDC is a good idea because they couldRead More coordinate the results of the survey nationwide. 2) We need better awareness and methods of the problems and how to deal with them. And 3) the government phobic response. Que Dave. I think it's more dangerous not to confront the subject among those at the highest risk and who are least able to deal with the problems because of their mental and emotional immaturity. The more insight we have into the causes for teens wanting to take their own lives the more aware we will be of the problems and the better able we would be to devise methods that help those most vulnerable.
Dave June 19, 2013 at 07:27 pm
Sure, a survey makes complete sense then. Maybe they can even count how many suicides occurredRead More while they were wasting tax dollars on another useless survey.

Tr - the perfect diet - the Mediterranean diet has a lot of fish in it. Olive oils etc... OurRead More American diet has a lot of animal fat in it and look at us as opposed to other nations! Fish oil is brain food. A multi is good, but we should ask our pediatricians about adding fish oil to our kids' diets. We should get our (good) fats through diet. Good fats help vitamins go where they are supposed to and do what they're supposed to do.

My grandma always drunk coffee all day and I started around 30 and I am no good without at least oneRead More cup a day but she always stated that we couldn't have any as kids because it will stunt our growth. DR, seems like an oxymoron doesn't it? I'd like to hear from someone who is actually from there toRead More find out their spin on why they even enter a contestant in the first place. It's my understanding that a woman that shows that much skin in public will be flogged or worse? Maybe democracy is taking ahold in some places, who knows?
Good Grief Y'all June 17, 2013 at 03:24 pm
I was wrong. Guys are interested pageants. You would no doubt be happy if the contestants justRead More wore the face shawl with their bikinis.

Couple of thoughts - One, why hold it in a land where there is going to be this kind of protest?Read More Just move it and don't worry about it. Other, I find it interesting how the Muslims want us to be understanding and inclusive of their beliefs, but don't even think they'll allow anything they don't agree with. Just a tad bit hypocritical...
